Hi, i've got a problem with the audio input levels. I'm trying to record a vocal but as soon as i arm the audio track for recording the levels are already in the middle and flickering as though picking up sound. The weird thing is even when i disconnect the mic and everything else for that matter keyboard, soundcard etc the audio track levels are still picking up something. When i do record the vocal the background noise is terrible and peaks really easily. Hope some one can help me with this. The mic is this;- Electro-Voice N/D767a Dynamic Vocal Microphone.

What you are seeing is the noise floor of the input or input+mic. With a mic you would also pick up some ambient noise that is unique to your space. It should not be audible. If it is, then something is wrong.

What is the db of the signal you see. It will probably be very low.

You can adjust the range of the meters to hide this. Right click on the meter and select the range or hover over the meter with your mouse, and true the scroll wheel on the mouse to cycle through the different settings.

Hi Peter, thanks again. I'm sat with my laptop here now and i've booted up Acid and armed an audio track and still the meters are hovering around the -24 mark. The setting is -60 to 0. I have nothing connected to the laptop except battery charger. I coughed and immediately the levels peaked into the red so it must be a setting on my laptop something.

Please fill out your system specs in your user profile!

Was the mic connected when you coughed?

-24db is about average for your standard PCs built in audio. May be a bit high. If it is the builtin mic on your laptop, then it is even more expected.

However, with out knowing exactly what your audio hardware is, ymmv.

Peter
