External control bug in 10d (not 10c) ?

FocusOnVegas wrote on 5/21/2011, 6:41 AM
I want to use a midi device (M-audio Triggerfinger) as an external control device for Sony Vegas.
With Vegas 10c, 32 bit and 64 bit, there is no problem.
With Vegas 10d, 32 bit and 64 bit, the midi device is recognized but it is not possible for Vegas to "learn" from the midi device. Probably Vegas doesn't receice midi data.
With (demo version) Vegas 9e there is no problem too.

With all other programs the midi device operates well.

Ik reinstalled 10c and 10d a couple of times, with always the same result.
I disabled User Account Control (UAC), but no change. I updated the BIOS and drivers of my motherboard, but no change. So my conclusion is that the problem must be Vegas 10d.

The workaround for me at this moment is to use the 64 bit 10d version when I don't use the external control and to use the 32 bit 10c version when I want the external control.

Windows 7 64 bit. Intel I7 platform.

Any suggestions?
Am I the only person with this problem?

Hi VegasDick, Can't really comment exactly on your problem, but I just switched from using an M-Audio Oxygen 8 as an extrnal controller to a ShuttlePro2 with the result 10d 64bit crashed every few seconds. Fixed by setting options>external control to off, even though I would have thought the Shuttle Pro was an external controller. Maybe this will work for you also. In any case, its the sort of simple error that should have been caught by a programmer, so yes, there's probably a few other sloppy issues in there as well.

Rainer,

It is a pitty, but your solution doesn't work for me.

Thanks anyway for your response !

I am trying to set up my keyboard controller Emu XBoard61 so that when I press C6 it controls play on the transport. I'm sure I set up the correct inputs but so far nothing is happening. Even the midi learn doesn't seem to be responding.

Version 10e has still the same bug (no midi receiving / learning) with external control.

The only workaround for me on Windows 7 64 bit is to install both version 10c 32 bit and version 10e 64 bit (is no problem).

The 10c version works without problems with the (midi) external control.
The 10e version works not with the same (midi) external control.

So in my opinion Sony introduced a bug in 10d and 10e. At least on a (fast) PC with Windows 7 64 bit.

Anybody with no problems with external midi control in 10e (64 bit) at Windows 7 64 bit ?

Other people with the same problems ?

An emulated Mackie control surface (IPad - AC-7 app - rtpMIDI) is working in Vegas 10 c (32 bit) and 10e (64 bit). In 10e only as an "Emulated Mackie control device". In 10c Vegas is receiving midi data (can "learn") as "Generic Control" too.

In 10e Vegas is receiving midi; it is reacting on "pitch bend" from my (hardware) keyboard (controller) in "Emulated Mackie control device" mode.

So it seems that the problem / bug is pinpointed to the "General Control" mode in 10 e / 10d. So that is why all the people who have a Mackie control are not complaining?

Sony, did you already found a solution?
When can we expect a bug fix?

No, a solution has not been found. I hesitate to guess as to when a fix will be available.

Thanks for helping us narrow it down.

Peter,

Two questions :
1. Will there be a 10 (f) version without this bug ? When ?
2. If there is no fix yet, will Vegas 11 (first release) have the same bug ?

For professional software (at least the price is) I may expect that after 5 updates (10e) such problems will be solved by a company like Sony ?!

Best regards Dick

I am using a Roland A-800 Pro with sliders and knobs and the controllers work fine in Win7 64 bit/Vegas 10e 64bit.

My Contour Shuttle Pro v2 works fine as well.

FocusOnVegas wrote on 9/14/2011, 2:22 PM
Thanks for your response.

It seems that the Contour Shuttle Pro v2 is not a midi device (mouse / keyboard type)?

Does your Roland A-800 Pro work in "general control" mode?
What is your device type at "preferences", "external control and automation"?

The problem seems to be related to the "general control" mode after Vegas 10 c (so with version 10d en 10e; with version 10c I don't have the midi problems in "general control" mode).

I did find that if you build a template in version 10A, you can load that in version 10E. I assume it would work for 10C as well. But I also noticed that 10E 64 bit, does not seem to respond as well to the controller as 10A 32 bit does.

I hope Sony will fix this bug in 10f (will there be a 10f?).

I am curious if the bug still exists in version 11.
