I have files where I want to get rid of background humming noise produced by the boat's motor. I have tried the presets of the Noise Gate filter but can never achieve an acceptable result. Could someone propose a preset or parameter values? A second question is that the tools menu gives 3 such filters namely Express FX Noise Gate, Noise Gate and Track Noise Gate. They have the same parameters. Which one should I use? Thanks. |

Noise gate is functional where you have a quiet continuous background noise that is noticeable in the gaps between people speaking much louder than the noise. It functions by muting the audio during the quiet noise but letting ALL the sound, both voice and noise, come through when people are talking. The theory is that while people are talking, the quieter sound is much less noticeable. A Gate will never remove noise during the parts of the audio you want to hear. It's also nonfunctional when the noise is close to or louder than the part you want to keep. In your situation you probably need a noise reduction plugin, not a gate. |

By Noise Reduction Plugin do you mean the product which costs US$279.95? If this is what you mean, being an enthusiatic amateur video lover I can not afford to buy this plugin. Then is there anything else that I can do to at least reduce this humming noise? |

That's correct. I've heard that Audacity includes some sort of noise reduction filter built in, and it's free. Google for it and download it. You can edit the sound track in that then bring it back into Vegas to replace the original audio. |

A very good suggestion. In fact I have allready discovered that Audacity has a free plugin like that and I have tested it in the past few hours. The problem is I can not find a place in the sound track of the file where there is only this humming noise and nothing else. The humming noise is always at the background and there are other voices, sounds etc which I would rather keep if possible. Therefore the question remains the same. Can anyone come up with some parameters value advice or point to a library of sets of parameters which I can use? Thanks. |

Probably not, sorry. Noise Reduction only works when taking a sample of the actual noise you have. The slightest amount of difference will kill the whole process completely. Any chance you could go back and record some more of just the boat motor noise and nothing else? Of course, it would have to be as close a match as possible in order to be usable. |

I don't know about the noise reduction process in Audacity, for most NR app's or plug-ins, only a few milliseconds is necessary for a 'Noise Print' . |
