Early May for Vegas 10d Update?

Hehehe, starting this thread per post #13 by Steven Myer over on this thread: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=760913&Replies=12

Anyway, since there is only about a half a day left in April (Wisconsin TZ) perhaps they should have said Vegas 10d would be released in Q2 2011. That way a lot of people would have been surprised when it was released before the end of Q2 or alternatively Sony would have had plenty of time to delay the update for persistent bug fixes or whatever.

Hmmmm

Perhaps announcements made at NAB should be given the same credence as Politician's promises?

I guess late-April is looking less likely ....

Indeed. Most of the release yentas on this forum would do well to keep this in mind:

Here is a small ditty for us all to say each day of the wait. Perhaps sing it to some tune you write... it may give us all the extra patience and anticipation we need for the process to run its course.

We have to wait yet another day
For Sony to bring a new version our way
That will fill up our wishes, our hopes and our prayers
That this brand new version will be one full of cures

We look for the fix that will keep us alive
In the awesome business of video lines
And audio tracks that remind our clients
That we are here for them and solely compliant

To create commercials, movies and such
Including 3D if they have such a hunch
But we need it to work and don’t mind the waiting
For the Sony Vegas 10d update ultimate editing

Okay... I wrote it fast. The rhythm is not always keen... but it may keep you busy in your wait. :-0 so sing!

Not only rhythm, but the rhymes! Ouch!

I'm working for a company than also writes windows applications. I have seen the agony and frustration in the SW dept. when they try to keep some bug fix timelines. Sometimes they will find themselves between the "bark and the tree". You should publish but there are just some other major fixes lurking just behind the corner. It's a loos-loose situation. You don't like to let down those that are waiting, but on the other hand you see the benefit in including more in the same release. In both cases you get criticism, from the field and within the company.

If SCS has made a decision to postpone a couple of weeks for such a reason (fixing more at the same time), I see no problem in it. On the contrary, I would have taken a similar decision, especially when bug fixes within SCS are not that frequent anyhow.

It would, however, be prudent to publish something officially, if there was earlier an official promise. Again, I don't know how official those promises during NAB actually were... and I have not seen anything officially published about the 10d release date.

Cheers,

Christian

It is highly unlikely they (Sony) have slid the release just to irritate people. The only logical conclusion is something turned up at the last minute in which case, I would definitely agree with the decision to slide the release until it is fixed. As one who used to do software (and hardware) for a living, I understand only too well how that one last "minor" bug fix can break other things. For those that think it is easy to get "clean code with no bugs", I used to work with avionics software that had to be tested in compliance with DO-178B (which takes millions of dollars of effort). Even then, things can get through. (look up what is required for Level A software that is in compliance with DO-178B if you think it is easy). For those that find a few days slide an "irritation", you should see how the poor software guys feel right about now !! You can bet they are getting more management "help" than they need :-)

You want frustration, let's talk space shuttle launch delays. "okay, so let's fill the tank with hydrogen...it'll take a couple of days. Oh wait. Nevermind. Empty it again." (repeat)

I'm actually all for delays if it makes for a more reliable release. I do appreciate the way Cakewalk keeps users informed of updates (and they've even modified their updates to a formal program for patches and fixes).

A little oil on the squeaky wheel (re: us all) and the noise goes away. :-)

The longer until the update release the longer until the "I UPGRADED IN THE MIDDLE OF A PROJECT AND NOW IT WON'T WORK, STUPID SONY" threads start popping up.

Really, nobody here should be upgrading right now anyway as I'm sure most here are in the middle of something & I'm betting most here don't have the old update backed up either, just in case (I'm still using b on my main comp, works just fine for the most part).

Friar be happy. In my case, an older already completed V10 project got resurrected into something new and much more involved. If I had known that was going to happen I never would have used the touchy V10 to begin with.

I still say that if a company publicly announces when they believe an update will happen like Sony did at NAB in front of the whole world, then the least they can do is give a new estimate for the release date. I don't need to know what the problems are or who screwed up. Just as simple revised release date.

The post could be this simple:

Thanks for your patience. New projected release date May 14.

anatavism

In all fairness, the stakes on a bug free "shuttle" release are a bit higher, if they don't get that right, people might die.

Still. I agree with some of the other comments on this thread, and the original "end of April" one, that a delay is most likely caused by the finding of a problem severe enough that SCS decided to get it fixed right away.

But they could at least post a note telling us about the new ETA.

I haven't seen any official statement, but I assume Sony's representative at NAB used qualifiers as "plan on" or "expect to" when they talked about 10d being released at the end of April.

Just FYI... the official announcement is here:
http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/news/ShowRelease.asp?ReleaseID=748&CatID=0

(Or click "About Us" at the top of this webpage, then click "Press Releases".)

Even when the press release first came out, I thought the title should say "Sony Creative Software Announces New Update for Vegas™ Pro" (rather than "SCS Releases New Update..."), since that was early April and they weren't expecting to release the update until the end of the month.

Like most everyone, I would rather not have it released before it's ready for primetime -- even if that means a delay of a few weeks.
