Help in choosing a new computer and sound card for audio work.

I work for a non-profit that helps those with print-disabilities. The organization that I work for just purchased SoundForge 4.5, the upgrade, and NoiseReduction 2.0. We just converted from an analogue system and I am converting to the digital world (and loving it!).

I work with audio files that are recorded in 16-bit mono at 22,050 Hz. The file lengths range from 15 minuets to 1hrs, with most averaging 50 minuets. The computer looses the audio drivers or freezes when playing (Not processing). I have the most up to date drivers for the sound and video card. The computer is just a lemon, and has always given us problems.

Know these use requirements, what kind of computer and sound card would you suggest? RAM requirements, etc… Any "out-of-the-box" solutions would be much appreciated. I don't need a super computer, just one that will get the job done.

[Side note: I love the Noise Reduction plug-ins. It has made my job very easy and has salvaged audio that I would of previously had to re-record.]

If you're looking for something relatively inexpensive, look at the Echo Mia. Good card, good price (less than $200). If you're looking to spend more than that, look at some of the other Echo cards. I've had some driver issues with them (I run Win2K), but if you're running a different OS, then they are WELL worth the money!

Thanks for the input. I am looking into that sound card manufacture. I am running Windows 2000, and is seems that there are not as many drivers for audio cards for this OS.

No need in purchasing a new pc'if you have a budget around $600-$700,you can purchase good a very good sound card that does not use shared resources(this type of card relies on its own resources to run and uses min resources of your pc.You might want to try 1 of these types of sound 3D accelerator cards.

David,

I've been looking at the Echo cards (I'm running W2K) and I thought that they had resolved the driver issues.

What kind of problems are you finding?

Thanks, I am looking into getting a good sound card. I have an ok P.C., but I can spend up to 2,000 on a tower and sound card if I need to. I am first going to look at new sound cards.

Oddly, I am finding 4.5 is more stable than 5.0. I processed a couple of hundred hours of audio with 4.5, and only had to reset ever 20-30 minunits, but wow 5.0- every 2-3 minutes. I hope a new sound card helps!
