Subject:Drums - compression?

I already recorded, cliped, fixed and "cleaned" 15 drum tracks on my Soundforge. I looked through all the effects and maybe the only effect I could use would be a little reverb (kind of artistic) and I heard once that on Soundforge it would be good to use compression. I tried Compression out and all I see it does is put up the volume of the track. Is that better or worse to my recording? What is comrpession? It cleans out frequencies not listened by human ear so it cleans it up? Doesnt all the volume distort my track? What other effect would sound cool on drums?
Thanks.

Time to repost this cool link. There's a lot of other information on the web that covers compression, mastering techniques, and so on, but this is an excellent resource.
