10.0c Crashing During Playback

i c e wrote on 4/4/2011, 8:11 AM
Hi all,
I have been using 10.0c for a few weeks now, no problems with some large video projects but all of the sudden I am having a lot of trouble.

I am doing a few projects of pure sound track, no video, something I have always done with out problem. But now, out of no where it just keeps crashing for no reason. just frozen gone. So constant I cant even work.

Any ideas? Should I go back to .a? if so how?

thanks all,

Ice

Hi Ice, are your system specs up to date? I've encountered the same problem, 10c, thought it might be 64bit related. Add a couple of audio only tracks and it crashes frequently on playback and if you move a clip. Sometimes backup won't open. Short SD project. Converting MP3 to WAV seems to be help. I've sent the crash reports to SCS., but I think this is a serious and probably not uncommon issue.

It must be a 64 bit thing. I'm still using 32 bit and do a lot of audio only with no crashing.

I'd strongly suspect your audio card drivers. You can also get into the Vegas preferences and change the way that Vegas interfaces with your audio drivers, there are usually several choices. Change that and see if it helps.

i c e,

I have the same exact problem and I thought it was Vegas Pro 10c, and I wanted to use 10b but my project even crashes then. Doesn't matter what I am on, 10c or 10b. My problem is that when I add an audio event FX to my audio clip of my video, such as the "reverb" audio effect to get that echo I want, Vegas Pro crashes when I try to playback and it is frustrating. Vegas Pro 10c runs and edits fine when I don't add any audio effects to my clips but when I do while editing my project, crash. Here is my crash report I get every time after I add an audio effect and Vegas crashes:

Problem Description
Application Name: Vegas Pro
Application Version: Version 10.0c (Build 470) 64-bit
Problem: Unmanaged Exception (0xc0000005)
Fault Module: C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 10.0\vegas100k.dll
Fault Address: 0x00000001800174F4
Fault Offset: 0x00000000000174F4

Fault Process Details
Process Path: C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 10.0\vegas100.exe
Process Version: Version 10.0c (Build 470) 64-bit
Process Description: Vegas Pro

I have been talking back and forth with Sony technical support on the forums trying to solve this issue because it is holding back my editing flow and process and I am on a deadline to get this project finished. Here is the link to the other forum: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?MessageID=756692&Replies=21

Hopefully some solution will be found for this.

Hi John, thanks for the suggestion - I've tried just about every option in the audio preferences. The crashes in my case occur without any VST plugins or effects and seem pretty random but frequent, generating virtually the same error report as Tony. Tony - thanks for the link.

Hi thanks all,
I've been absent so..uh... sorry... but I just figured it out yesterday.

I wasn't able to render out anything at all, it was getting rediculous. I tried all the sound devices on the pc. ...no luck...
but then I noticed that on playback a few of my audio clips were playing slower than the rest. Well it turns out that those clipes were at 48,000hz and the others were at 44,700hz so I put on a "non real time effect" to an un noticible volume margine and thereby replacing the clips.

It worked for now. No more problems since. Who knows? I think that was the problem.

thanks y'all

I've actually had similar problems. When I press the spacebar (or just the play button the video window) about 25% of the time Vegas will crash, pop up the crash window and then unload.

I just finished a major project, and I can't tell you how many times I had to restart Vegas. It was infuriating.

Running Win7 x64 and VP 10.0c, I contacted support and they advised me to uninstall Vegas, then create a new admin account and install it with that. It didn't solve anything.

The next instructions I have to are to unload a bunch of the add-ons and aps that run at start up so I'll try that next.

You can see the project here:

It was week start to finish (the client was in a hurry). I stopped counting after 40 restarts.

I love Vegas, but this project and all the crashes really tried my patience.

All that said, the project was very sound intensive (well, not very, but lots of high resolution files - the project was presented in a large auditorium with a BIG sound system (and a video projector that was massive...it was liquid cooled with a radiator!).

Anyway, I've never heard the audio theory before, so I've started playing around with the audio setups. I have an ASUS DX2 sound card, and I've been using the default "Windows Classic Wave Driver" for it. What's interesting, when Vegas crashes using the Windows Classic Wave Driver setup, I get the debug "what happened when the error ocurred" screen. Using the differently using the "Windows Wave Mapper" I just get the white fade screen and Vegas unloads. So I suspect there's something to the theory. I'm going to have to load up my MOTU Ultralite and see if I have better (or different) results with the Ultralite ASIO drivers, or the Direct Sound Surround Mapper.

At this point, I'll do anything (include swap sound cards) for better results / fewer crashes.
