CD Burn problem

hbwerner wrote on 11/29/2010, 9:13 PM
I'm pulling my hair out trying to get a complete CD burn when doing disk-at-once with a number of track regions. Usually I get several seconds to a couple of minutes at the beginning of the disk and then the tracks are there and continue on but with no sound. I did manage to get one that recorded completely, then trimmed one of the tracks slightly, and now burning a CD gets only 5 seconds of the first track with sound. Everything looks fine on the edit details list. This is 10a, but I tried in on another computer with pro 6 and almost no memory head room, and it recorded about 8 minutes before doing the same thing. The disk blanks are Memorex, I did try low recording speed with no effect, and these disks can record audio fine with Windows Media Player. I'm using Vista with 8 gBit ram and 300 gB free memory. My pinch is I need these with no gap between tracks for a choral concert next week!

Definitely a bug in 10.0a. I just tried it and got 4 seconds of the first track; silence after that.

I have done this successfully in every version of Vegas from 3 to 9.0e, even back on old 486PCs running Windows 95 with 128MB RAM.

By the way, i assume you mean you have 8GBytes RAM, not 8Gbits. 8Bbits wouldn't be enough to run Vista.

edit ...

Ahhhhh, i had left the disc playing while i typed the above. I just heard about 10 seconds of track #4, but now back to silence again.

Thanks, Chienworks, for confirming I'm not going crazy. (And yes, it's 8 gBytes Ram). I've temporarily gotten around the problem by using Nero (an older version) on another computer (which I keep trying to retire but turn when problems like this arise). Please keep me posted on when the problem in Pro 10 is resolved. H_B_Werner@msn.com

One additional problem in 10.0a I noticed is the automatic placing of markers to the juncture of individual tracks was inaccurate - I had to go back and move some of them.

Ive had a few silent cd's but they are always after I burn another CD! First time burn, always ok! When it asks "Do you want to burn another one?" I sometimes get an empty disc. I haven't tested on VP10 but VP6 and VP8.

I guess I'll be keeping CD Architect after all. I use it out of nostalgia and because it works.
hbwerner wrote on 12/3/2010, 8:29 AM
John, Who supplies CD Architech? Can you use it like Pro is supposed to work, taking a single track and splitting it with markers (or use individual tracks to piece together something) so that the CD can skip to desired tracks?
john_dennis wrote on 12/3/2010, 9:07 AM
CD Architect is from Sony:

http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/download/trials/cdarchitect

It does "track-in-file". Splits are not necessary or desireable as in the case of a live concert. Much of the functionality is in Vegas and Sound Forge but CD Architect focuses on the nitty-gritty of CD authoring. I use it rarely, anymore, but always enjoy the experience when I do.

Thanks, John - I'll try it. Sometimes I want the two second splits and sometimes want the media to be continuous but still with points for toggling to. I did check the forum for it and there were reports of the same kind of problem I found in Vegas Pro, but you had luck so maybe I will, too.

Are we experiencing the same thing Chienworks?

I'm using the disk-at-once selecion in the burn disc menu. I almost always use the render before burning option, but that doesn't make a difference. Sometimes the disc will burn perfectly, other times it will have the proper number of tracks, and the correct duration, but will not have audio for the entire length. I've had as little as part of a second of audio, to as much as all but the last couple of seconds before the audio would go silent. I've reported it, but so far the engineer types have not been able to replicate this.

My solution is to use VP9 when I have to do CD's and VP10 for video. VP9 works without a hiccup. Not sure what the problem is with VP10. The only other thing I have noticed, is using the extract audio from CD function. In VP9 it didn't matter what I set it to, it always went as fast as it could go: i.e. I could set it at 4x say, and it would rip at 16x. Using VP10 to rip a disc, it follows the speed setting I set in the dialog. If I want a 4x rip I get a 4x rip. I just don't always get a CD that has audio from start to finish.

Will ImgBurn (free and excellent) do the job for you?
JimMSG wrote on 3/25/2011, 12:51 AM
I have ImgBurn, and it is an excellent program. But it is not the right tool for this. Too many additional steps to get a CD. I like burning right from the time line. VP9 works well, I just like the mix environment in VP10 a bit better.

From what I can tell, I don't believe there has been much if any coding change in this area between 9 and 10. There has been some speculation from the engineering types, that it is a "compatibility issue" with my burner.

Same issue on two different burners - Plextor and LG. Both are new; the LG can burn BluRay disks also.

I haven't been pulling out my hair, but certainly would if I had any left.

Four seconds of audio is a good start, but the other 45min would be greatly appreciated.

SONY - Either GET THIS FIXED or give me a free copy of a program that will let me reliably burn audio CDs.

I have been having the same problem for months. Everything works fine in Vegas Pro 8 but I have the blank track problem in Vegas Pro 10. I went through many discs testing the problems. I tried different computers, different operating systems, different burners and different discs. I tried burning at different speeds and sent all this information to Sony technical department asking them to either fix the problem or tell me what I could do to fix it. I waited three weeks for a reply what I received was a form email that refered me to a general faq telling me to try all the things I had already reported to them. I don't think they are going to fix the broken software. Vegas has gone through two updates since then and there has been no change and no mention of it. I am glad, at least, that I am not the only person wiith the problem. The way they treated my reporting of the problem made it seem that the problem was with me.

Time is of the essence in a professional production environment and three weeks is an unacceptably long time to wait for a reply - especially one that infers that no attempt was made to understand the nature of your issue or the steps you have taken to resolve it on your own.

Unfortunately, this seems to be the norm, not the exception. One reason I love Vegas is that formal tech support is seldom needed (maybe twice in the past 6 years) and has been above average. Factor in this amazing user forum and I've had zero downtime.

My work-around: render audio tracks as individual .wav files and use Windows to burn an audio CD from these files. Inelegant, but workable.

Vegas Pro 8 works fine, but that is not the point. A portion of the software is broken and there doesn't seem to be an attempt to fix it.
Chienworks wrote on 4/18/2011, 1:43 PM
Yep. That and some issues with mpeg rendering make version 10 pretty much useless for me. I'm still using version 9. I haven't really even explored 10 at all since i can't open 10 .veg files in 9, and i have to use 9 for the final output.
