10c Crashing on Save

Kit wrote on 3/21/2011, 2:31 AM
I just updated to version 10c 64 bit on Windows 7 64 bit and Vegas is vanishing with no error message when I try to save. Even a new project with just a video track and no media! Has anyone else experienced such problems?. Could it be caused by a Windows update. I have yet to install Windows 7 SP1 - could it help? Thanks

It's not just 10c - 10b is doing it as well. I've also discovered that it doesn't happen running as administrator. Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? Thanks.

Do you have some backup images of your C: drive you could install 10C onto? If not, now is the time to do it (after a clean reinstall).

I did a clean uninstall/re-install of 10c...
following the instructions on the Sony support pages (as well as manually deleting everything "Sony Creative Software" Vegas" from the registry)
as well as the W7-64bit SP1 update and things improved quite a bit on my system. I am not a power user by any means though.
Since that update, I've only had one instance of "Vegas has stopped working" and have never had a crash on Save.

If the other suggestions do not fix your problem, you may have an incompatibility between Vegas and another device or program. This is not uncommon. I have had 3 instances, fixed 2 and I am about to try the 3rd.

To diagnose if a program or device which loads in your PC at startup time is causing your Vegas to crash, go to Start, type msconfig, enter and look for startup. Turn off all.

Restart your PC. If it operates, open Vegas and go through the steps that lead to your crash. If it operates well and does not crash, you have identified the root cause. Now, patiently, go back to the above step and start turning on one at a time until you hit the one that causes Vegas to crash.

If it is a device, leave it on. You can go to Control Panel, Hardware, select the offending device, right click and then select Disable. This will turn the device off, it will NOT uninstall it, and it will therefore not collide with Vegas. Later, if you need the device, go to Control Panel, Hardware, select the device, right click and enable it.

Messy but effective IF it is a collision or incompatibility.

Good luck.

I've never needed to run as admin.

If not mentioned load the BAK file because it is a copy of the last save. Vegas 10c has crashed on save twice for me. A serious WTF moment! Never happened before with any other version of vegas. 10c is the problem.

A VERY BIG DISAPPOINTMENT!

Another WAG related to running as administrator -- I've had issues with various programs if not originally set up using 'run as administrator' to run the setup program, or run as administrator for the program itself. You might also check the registry permissions for the program and make sure that it is allowed to do things like save. If you are crashing on the save function, then you may not have rights (or Vegas may not have been assigned rights) to save files in the locations (folders) where you are trying to perform the save.

Thanks, Dave. I've never had any problem until yesterday. I restored a disk image from 2 months ago and Vegas behaved itself. I reinstalled the Windows 7 security updates but not the optional ones - so far so good. Have yet to try Service Pack 1. It's looking like some optional update caused the problem.

I've been having a periodic problem with 10 c 64 bit crashing as well. I've let it do its data dump that sends it along to SONY. It didn't seem to do it nearly as often with 10 b. I haven't been able to pin it down to a specific set of keystrokes, but in terms of admin rights, that's not the issue. I'm an admin on my own machines.
