Subject:Acid 3 and Sound Forge: all I need?

I considered buying Vegas Video the other day. The version without the manual is on sale at Best Buy for $150.. I couldn't think of any real need for it. I have Acid 3 and Sound Forge 5. I can do midi, loops, direct tracking, editing, mastering, cd burning, mp3 conversion. I just didn't think I needed Vegas Video even at the tempting price. My wife was very impressed at my self control. Not being very good to look at, I don't need the video part. Any Vegas users got any arguments why I need it? |

I've got Acid and had a demo for Vegas (version 1) and the same thing hit me, that is, why would somebody need BOTH? I'm certainly not an expert in either program nor do I pretend to understand all the marketing niches but I just don't see what the same company is accomplishing putting out two very similar programs. But maybe somebody can give the differences between the two. I just can't see the reason somebody would need both but then again, I don't do any video at all so maybe that's where I'm missing something. PaulB |

If I had choice, I would pick Vegas *Audio* before picking Vegas *Video*, the only reason being I'm into music, not video. Vegas is really a true multitrack recorder/editor. An instance of its use would be to record several tracks of audio *at the same time*. Really useful for bands or groups. It actually compliments ACID in the sense that you can create a music bed in ACID and have Vegas sync to it with anything you create in there. What SF *does* need is a MIDI sequencer to the tune of Calkwalk's. I'd be the first in line for it. HTH, Iacobus |

No expert here, but I only have VegasLE and already I can see it's limitations (especially those annoying popups!) in that it only accepts one video track. So for an actual video project other software would be needed. There is a 'Vegas' family comparison @ http://www.sonicfoundry.com/products/NewShowProduct.asp?PID=280&FeatureID=2796 |

Hi, As far as I can see Vegas can do all the stuff Acid can do, so the Acid I bought becomes redundant if I upgrade to Vegas. Acid can't seem to cope with too many disk based tracks and Vegas LE doesn't have enough of them. I'll try sync'ing LE and Logic (for Midi) to Acid and watch it all crash most probably. But it's like $99 downloads here $99 downloads there, $99 upgrades later, get $99 W98SE for a bug fix release. Unfortunately I only have so many $99 to spend... Haven't decided yet whether it's all worth it, but I gotta say the timestretching on-the-fly facility is totally fantastic. Regards M |

ACID is great for a couple disk-based tracks, but if you use a ton of disk-based stuff, Vegas Audio is the way to go. ACID does loop-based sequencing with aplomb. That's its selling point. ACID just compliments Vegas for the stuff you cannot do on your own. I don't even have the need for a drummer anymore, because I can do all the programming within ACID (using percussion One-Shots) and it sounds fantastic and realistic. A huge plus, especially for someone like me, who can't even play drums worth a damn to begin with. Iacobus |

I'm surprised that so many people feel this way... These really aren't meant to be competitive products, rather, they're all complimentary. Acid is just for loop based music creation. Read some of the past posts-- adding too many vocals (disk based), for example, can cause problems. And it's not really a multitrack editor... Sound Forge is the clip editor... And Vegas is the true multitrack. So, if all you're doing is loop based stuff, Acid and Sound Forge is all you really need. If you really need a multitrack, go with Vegas. I've been very impressed with all three, and especially considering the price at Best Buy ($150 for Vegas & Sound Forge, $200 for Acid), you really can't go wrong. |

David, Stop with the "great price at Best Buy" stuff! I've been trying to resist whipping out my Best Buy card and snarffin' it! Of course, you are right. :) |

But isn't the ver. available at BestBuy just Vegas not 2.0 (and with 3 later this year)? |

Last month Best Buy put Acid on sale for $99. I said "wow"! Now they got both Acid 3 and Sound Forge 5 for $149. Still cheap though. |

The version at Best Buy is Vegas Video 2.0. It has all the features as Vegas Audio, and hell, the cheapest I've seen Vegas Audio for is around $250-$300-ish. So, I paid less & just not use some of the video features... And, as per 3.0... yeah, I'm sure there will be an upgrade by the end of the year. That leaves me with 2 options: either a) spend $100-ish for the upgrade, or b)not bother with it (as I did with Acid-- I'm perfectly happy with 2.0). The $150 plus the upgrade for Vegas is still, in all probability, cheaper than you'd end up picking up 3.0 for. Just my .02 (or $150) |
