Sound Forge should work fairly well on a laptop. Limitations are sometimes: a) the on-the-board sound chip, which is often nowhere near as good as many sound cards & b) the fact that the hard disks in laptops tend to be fairly slow (up to 4,200 rpm or 5,400 rpm). So some operations will be slower, but otherwise, shouldn't be any problems. You should always try out what software you can before purchase, and we have a demo of Sound Forge 5.0 available here.

I've been using SF on my laptop for almost 2 years now. I mostly do editing and sound restoration through SF, and have had no trouble at all on my Sony 450 mhz, pIII with modest 6 gig hard-drive. I keep my audio files on an external western digital 30 gig firewire drive. Basically only stereo files, but absolutely no stuttering. And I almost forgot, I use the OPCODE USB Sonicport for audio in/out. Sounds great, and none of that cheezy soundcard noise. It gives both digital SP/DIF and analog in/out plus a variety of sampling rates.
