Subject:How do I enhance a voice?

I've heard that separating voice from background is like mixing two colors of paint in a bucket and then trying to extract just one of those colors. It can't be done. But is it possible to make one of those colors more prominent...make the voice "enchanced" over the rest of the audio? Any suggestions you might have would be helpful. Thanks!
