Subject:Updated to 10c - deleted Forge100.exe

I'm a long time SoundForge user. I updated to 10c a couple of days ago. I opened it and used it. Shutdown my computer (XP home). Boot it up today: Forge100.exe is gone. Not in my trash bin. Its the only file missing on my computer. I know I didn't delete it.

What happened?

Are you sure it's not just the shortcut that vanished?
Check your C.:/ Program Files> Sony folder.

I missed the checkbox to put a shortcut on my desktop during the 10.0c update, so it removed my shortcut. Just had to pull another one over from the start menu. Make sure that the .exe is actually missing and not just the desktop shortcut.

It is not the shortcut that is gone. This is the file that does not exist anymore:

C:\Program Files\Sony\Sound Forge Pro 10.0\Forge100.exe

All the other files are in the folder.

If you go to start/programs/sony/SoundForge10 you see a broken shortcut as well.

Sony had a recording that they were in a company meeting today if you called tech support, and their email support system is currently erroring out if you try to submit a ticket, so any help I can get here is really appreciated.

Just run the installer again - it should repair whatever broke

Run the 10c update?

Or my original disks for 10.0?

Each update is a complete installer that doesn't require previous updates to be installed. Just run the latest one.

... and delete the folders C:\Program Files\Sony Setup\+++ first.

Though I think the installers have given up creating these lately (they are like 'install temp' files).

When I went to run the installer again, it said it was already installed and required that I uninstall everything first (which I did). After that everything worked. The guy I spoke with at Tech Support seemed cool, but I was disappointed to learn there is essentially no customer bug database for SoundForge, so Sony really doesn't document issues like what I ran into (ie I'm not sure that they have QA tested build 10c on an HP-Media Center running XP-Home with an older Layla card).

So keep an eye out if anyone else runs into this. Thanks all.

All very bizarre. You shouldn't need to unistall first, but a good idea anyway.

And of couse they run a database of bugs and problems. But maybe not of every little thing that crops up if not directly a SF problem.

Thanks. They keep a bug base for errors they are able to reproduce on the machines they have in QA, but there is no way they can test their builds on all the various motherboard/soundcard/os combinations - which can have issues of their own. Its always nice to have a user database where issues like mine can get documented (so you can look them up yourself). I believe they have one for Vegas, but not for Sound Forge. Its just a good thing to have if you develop a product with a big user base.

I would argue that this is essentially what this forum is for. Or, at least, what it is mostly used for. It's just as easily searchable as a bug database.

Forums are valuable. Here is how a user bugbase would work:

You choose the software and version that is giving you the problem
OS
Type of computer
SoundCard
bug description
list of other sound software installed

Users can browse through this list and see if anyone is experiencing a similar issue, and if so can look through and see if there are patterns.

for example "I see, people who have a certain version of autoTune installed are getting the same problem as me"

I think something like this would be great. SoundForge is a real work-horse for me and I rely on it and probably always will. So any tools to help me out on the rare occasion that I experience a problem would be great.
