If yousimply want to put something on CD-R without or very minimal processing use 16-bit. If you plan to do more than one or two things use 24 or 32-bit.

Reason? You actually destroy the sound of 16-bit files by processing, even if oyu just normalize. But if you just do one or two things it won't be noticable. But if you do any more, higher bit depths will help.
