Reinsalling Vegas on a New Computer

Richard Jones wrote on 11/18/2010, 6:28 AM
I've been trying to reinstall Vegas on a new computer I have just bought but have run into a problem.

I use Vegas 8 which I upgraded to from Vegas 6 in early 2008. To install 8 I have been asked to install version 6 first which I then have to upgrade to 7 (by a download if I remember right) before running the 8 installationj disc. Unfortunately I have lost my serial no. for version 6 and can't go any further. Can anyone help with a work around or advise me how to get the serial number I need please.

Incidentally, the new computer has Windows 7 (I was on XP before) which is running as a 64 bit system. Is this likely to be a problem with Vegas 8 or does it seem that I'm going to have to spend on Version 10 even though I hardly need its extra bells and whistles for the work I do?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Richard

At the top of this page, look at My Account|My Software.

I've never had to install a previous version for the upgrade to work. That's because the upgrade is in license only, the install files are the same if you have an upgrade or new version.

Depends on where he got the upgrade. Ones direct from Sony don't require anything installed. Some upgrade versions from retailers require that you have a previous (and sometimes fairly recent) version installed. I would guess since you didn't have to provide a serial number for the purchase, they need some way to make sure you're eligible.

I did buy the upgrade from a retailer so I guess this is why I need the number.

Any comments about the Windows 7/64 bit point?

I've never seen this in Sony software.

You had to register the software with Sony. Where's the disk?

As to the Win 7 64 bit point then Win 7 64 bit runs nearly anything.
I have not had Vegas 8 under W7/64 but I have Vegas 9.0 and Vegas 10.0 in both 32 bit and 64 bits versions installed.
And all 4 programs are running at the same time without any problems at all.

The 32 bit versions are still needed because some 32 bit plug-ins do not run under the 64 bit Vegas versions.

This said, btw, I can only give the new Vegas 10.0a my very best recommendations. It has not only got some fine bells and whistles but also some substantial improvements - i.e. preview speed and rendering speed - compared to version 8.

Did you find your serial number as Steven Myers suggested?
Richard Jones wrote on 11/19/2010, 2:56 AM
Thank you, Peter. Yes I found the serial numbers and feel this is something I should have known for myself. The little grey cells are getting greyer every day, I'm afraid, but many thanks to Steven Meyers.

Steve, I have the disks for Sony 6 and 8 and think my best plan of action in view of what Ritsmeer says is to load up from the discs, updating on the way, until I get to 8c and then see how this looks before deciding whether to upgrade to 10 as per the latest offer in today's e-mail.

Many thankls to everyone.

I note that alongside each serial number of your registered software is a link to the the latest version. You might download that as well while you are about it if you have not already done so.

Thank you Peter. Yep, it's all up[ and running now. I have another question which I'll start in another thread to try to keep some sort of order.
