Can't burn DVD Vegas 10 & DVDA 5.2

DavidPJ wrote on 10/22/2010, 4:05 AM
Before I start the long road of troubleshooting this problem with Sony I thought I would ask here first. When I first had this problem with Vegas 8.1/DVDA 5 I searched here and noticed others also had this issue. I worked with Sony tech support for 2-3 weeks and never got past diagnositic procedures and more trashed disks. I eventually gave up and switched to ImgBurn.

I've tried to burn a DVD from the timeline and haven't had any success. I'm running Win 7 Pro 64-bit with a DVD-RW. The writing lead-in reaches 100% then hangs there. Write buffer shows 0% wih no time remaining. Hit cancel and I get the blue spinning wheel and still no response. Hit cancel a few more times and I get the Vegas Pro is not responding message and Vegas closes.

I had the exact same problem on this system with DVD Architect 5. I was really hoping this problem would have gone away when I upgraded from 8.1. I've also tried DVD-Rs and ruined them too.

I also tried burning with DVD Architect 5.2 and had the same problem and another ruined DVD-RW. I'm able to burn with ImgBurn.

My DVD burner is a Pioneer DVR-218L with the latest and only firmware 1.02.

This is a relatviely new I7 930 6GB system that I've burned many DVDs with ImgBurn, but none with Vegas or DVD Architect.

Thanks for your comments.

Maybe a few details on the project would help?

I haven't burned a DVD directly from the TL, but have no trouble with DVDA 5.2 . The guess is that your workflow is a little different, so you need to describe your process.

I discovered this problem with DVD-A 5 and was also hoping that it would be fixed in 5.2. I was however able to burn to a DVD re-writable. So I use DVD-A to make the menu's then use Nero to finish the job.

DVD writer = Samsung Lightscribe enabled with latest firmware installed.

Thanks. Here's an example of a 2 minute test jpeg stills-only project I tried to burn from Vegas:

Properties: 1080-24p, Best, Interpolate None
Vegas Burn DVD: MPEG 720x480-60i, 16:9 NTSC

Let me know what else you might want to know. All of the video projects I've tried to burn since my similar burn problems with DVDA 5 have been 1080i-60 projects burned to MPEG 720x480-60i, 16:9 NTSC. It's very peculiar that I can't burn with Vegas or DVDA, but ImgBurn works fine.

I've been burning with DVDA since the Vegas 4 days and never a problem until DVDA 5 on my new system. I'm guessing it's a conflict somewhere but can't fiqure out a way of narrowing it down. Sony support was also having difficulty narrowing it down while I got tired of trashing DVDs.

It would be extremely useful if you detail the steps you are using to prepare and burn DVD's from within DA 5.2
I, and many of us, have been having problems burning DVD's from within DA 5.0 and have gotten no resolution from Sony Support. Like you, we have adopted a workaround in which DA 5 prepares the DVD but then we use a different program (ImgBurn, Roxio 9, Nero, etc) to burn the actual disc.
I was hoping DA 5.2 was fixed before investing in the upgrade. From your experience it seems that the problem persists.

I'll save you the wait. Fix your computer.

If Sony support, or anyone on this forum for that matter, cannot replicate your problem, then we can't offer much in the way of assistance.

I believe it has to do with motherboard drivers, probably SATA. I had the problem a long time ago and it was with a Pioneer drive. Don't remember for sure. Also if you have the full installation of Nero or Roxio their stuff links burning to their software and will block DVD-A. But don't remember for sure.

The problem has been replicated by Sony Support, a ticket was written (plus 3 others), and it is duplicated by many other forum users. The diagnosis and the workarounds were developed with Sony Support. The workarounds work perfectly, but they are a nuisance. So, I do not think there is something wrong with my computer since I do not experience neither the collisions nor the hangs with other programs that DA 5 does.

Maybe by comparing workflows and results we can get to the bottom of these problems. But so far, no luck.

Indeed it has been known that Roxio, and maybe Nero, hijack the registers to the burning drives. Adobe and Premier Elements had a patch to fix that which worked well. It appears Sony does not have a similar patch so I resort to disabling the offending (BlueRay player)device when using Vegas or DA5..

Melachrino,

How do you disable the offending device? Are you disabling the actual physical drive? In my case, I only haver 1 Pioneer DVD drive.

I would love to swap out my drive to see if that resolves it, but I don't have a spare.

I don't have Nero or Roxy.

If you can identify the colliding device, you can disable it (not uninstall it) and see if the program works correctly then. First try unhooking any external devices to your PC. If that does not work, continue below.

To disable (and later enable) a device in Win7 >Start>Control Panel>Hardware and Sound (click on this heading, not the ones below)>Devices and printers> Device Manager.

You will see a list of devices. If there is one in yellow, that may be your problem. If not, as a first pass (which can be undone safely) , right click on DVD/CD ROM. A menu will open and one entry is Disable. Click on Disable and close everything.

Try running your program. BUT, since you do not have a burner activated, then Make DVD to a folder by only using Prepare in DA5. Note what folder DA5 Prepares to. You may have to look at Settings first.

When finished Preparing the DVD, close that window.

Repeat the above Device Manager procedure this time to enable your burner. Close the Control Panel.

Go back to DA5, Make DVD and try Burn From Folder using the Folder noted above. This may work for you.

If this still does not work, I have used an external burner connected to USB and that seems to work better. Some users suggest that motherboards and internal burners may be the problem.

Finally, I assume that prior to burning a DVD you have been rendering your project to compatible DVD mpeg2 before importing to DA5. If you import avi to DA5 it will not work per Sony Support, I learned ...

Perhaps it would really assist helping you if you describe step by step how and what you do from project to burn.

Melachrino,

Thanks for the detailed explanation for disabling a device.
