Well, that throws me back to the dark ages. Looks like we will be back to recording CD to tape. Unless Program writers figure out a way to filter/control the safe guards. I noticed the article didnt mention DVD Music CD players maybe a way out there. DVD or Stereo unit to receiver then directly to 'A' Audio Editor. Here We go again. Thanks for the address. D. Melvin |

Well, I doubt anyone would want to go back to tape. Worst case would be to just record a CD from the audio using the soundcard, and than to the harddisc - digital (CD) to analog (sound card) and then back to digital (hard disc). That would certainly be better than using tape. I've see a little discussion on this at www.audioforums.com. One site that was mentioned there that may be promising is www.elby.de for their "Clone CD" which is suppose to make an exact duplicate of almost any CD (audio or data). "Almost" because I read somewhere (I couldn't find it at their site) that some protection codes could not (at the moment) be copied, but if I remember, the copy protection stated in the posted article was not one that could not be copied. Also stated was that CloneCD does real 1:1 copies, including all errors or other anomalies which might belong to a copy protection mechanism. |

I looked at www.audioforums.com and cound't find the thread where I saw the discussion about being able to copy (or unable to copy) the SafeAudio protection scheme. I'm sure I saw CloneCD referenced there, but for some reason that thread is no longer there (it was 6 JUL 01). Another possibility would be Exact Audio Copy (EAC). Look at http://www.digital-inn.de/showthread.php3?s=9fea6a61f51ac7ab225302649a32d0d6&threadid=4465 for an interesting discussion on this topic. If you follow a couple links in that discussion, you'll see that CD's with this protection has already been commercially sold. It seems as though the general consesus was that EAC cannot copy these protected CD's, although there was a link to a recorder that could. I'd still like to know if CloneCD can copy them. If nothing else, this link should make for some interesting reading. I'd like to know what others find on this subject. |

No kidding. I for one would not want to go back to CD to tape. But if push comes to shove it could be a way out. I noted your suggestions, If I buy a protected CD I will certainly try it. Many Thanks Dave M. |

Looks like someone already defeated Macrovision's copy protection. The full story is avaliable from The Register: http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/54/20766.html |
