i'm trying to use the Zoom H4n as an interface via USB and i feel like i'm SO close. i've got the latest ASIO drivers installed and the H4n updated. i've got the H4n set as the default recording / playback device in windows and the default under options> preferences> audio device in AcidMS. The H4n is set to interface and LED's are jumping. When i arm to record in AcidMS the LED appears on the track but is greyed out and unresponsive. (when i swap out the Zoom for one of the stock devices under options> preferences> audio devices and arm to record the LED returns to color and jumping -- though still not able to record). tried doing things in different orders and different USB cables and everything in the H4n manual is a go but it's still not happening. Anyone know why the track LED is greyed out for starters? |

If you are using the ASIO drivers in ACID then you may have to set Windows to use a different audio device than the Zoom. The drivers may not permit sharing between e native Windows drivers and the ASIO drivers. Peter |

a little over my head. i'm using windows 7, do you mean change the default playback or recording device under control panel> sound? i changed the playback default to be the realtek speakers but i can't change the recording device because there are no other options (and wouldn't that defeat the purpose anyway?). i don't know if i follow what you're suggesting i do. i'm still going to be using the Zoom H4n as interface, right? can you tell me exactly where to go and what to set? david |

Zoom mentions on their website: "Some audio problems may occur when using the H4n as an audio interface for some laptop computers based on AMD chipsets. Due to this compatibility issue, we recommend using laptop computers based on Intel chipsets." Don't know if this would hold true on a desktop system with an AMD chipset. Did you contact Samson (Samson handles Zoom's product support in the US) to see what they say? Iacobus |

thanks for bringing that to my attention Iacobus. i will contact them, though they love to let the phone go to a message saying "we'll get back to you." perpetually out to lunch, but i will try again. seems like a rather sneaky footnote to the grand promotion of the unit as an interface as if AMD is some obscure outfit. what is this "some" stuff? tell us what the problems are and what the models are. thanks for the lead! |

oh man, i am so close i can taste it! computer is communicating w/ Zoom H4n. got levels on both the H4n unit and the Acid track that is armed to record now! (previously levels were grayed out) everything seems a go! hit record! cursor moving! . . . but (sigh) nothing going down on the track. cursor is leaving no wave form (or whatever that dynamic thingy is called) in it's wake. tried track input left, right & stereo (testing via H4n's stereo mics). seems like i just need to flip a switch or something in Acid. the Zoom H4n is doing it's part. i'm right there! anyone know why levels but no recording? please help, would mucho appreciate!!! t h a n k s ! |

does anyone have any further ideas? i seem to be past any possible concerns about AMD. i really feel like there is probably just one last simple step that i am missing. thanks! |

I wish I could help, skroot. It sounds like it should be recording but something's preventing it from doing so. You mentioned that there was no recording device available for the H4n under the Sound applet in Control Panel. I was under the impression that if an audio interface was installed properly it should show up there. You have the latest ASIO drivers and the latest firmware for the H4n, so that's covered. Have you tried recording in the included Cubase LE software to see if you can repro there as well? (eww...Cubase.) |
