Shuttle Pro v2 issue with VP10?

tcbetka wrote on 10/11/2010, 4:20 PM
I am having problems getting my Shuttle Pro v2 to work correctly. I've tried importing the .pref file from the Sony directory, but no matter what I try, I cannot get the jog wheel to work. It jogs 2 frames in either direction, and then quits. And after messing with it for about 5 minutes the first time out, the application froze entirely. It wouldn't play at all--and I had to unplug the Shuttle Pro in order for it to play again, after I restarted Vegas Pro 10.

So it seems as though there might be an issue with the Shuttle Pro v2 in VP10. It works perfectly for me in VP8.0c, although that was on XP and I am now on Windows 7. When I run the Shuttle's control panel application, everything seems to be recognized just fine--it just doesn't work correctly inside the VP10 application.

Anyone else have luck with this device?

As I recall this was a problem with Vegas and Windows 7 for a while - they did come out with a fix. Give them a bug report.

Heh...after investigating this problem a bit more thoroughly, it may not be a problem with the Shuttle Pro v2 at all--it may be a Vegas Pro 10 problem. I continued trying to use the SPv2, and it locked up again. So I restarted the application with the SPv2 unplugged, but it didn't improve. So I rebooted the machine, and now when I start VP10, I cannot get the project to play at all! I did check the release notes, but didn't see any known issues with the SPv2 device; so my guess is that was an incidental finding that may not represent a real problem. I think the problem is with VP10 itself.

The problem I am having is that I cannot start project playback using the space bar on the keyboard, or with the play button in the transport bar inside of Vegas Pro 10. When I try the space bar, the little disk icon above the view window in VP10 ("Save Snapshot to File") toggles on/off, but the application will not play at all. The focus for the play button on the transport bar also toggles on/off. But when I try the play button in the transport bar, the little icon highlights once and then goes out; clicking on the play button again does not toggle the icon on/off as with the space bar.

So it looks like it might be back to VP8c on XP for me, because this is entirely unusable. I don't really understand it either, because I was able to at least play the project about an hour ago, when I first installed the application. The only thing I really did to it was to install the software for the Shuttle Pro v2, that I just downloaded from the Contour Design website. But now I cannot play an existing project, or a new one. I can open or create a project alright, but it simply won't play.

I suppose that I can try to uninstall the SPv2 device, and try VP10 again. I also see that there is a later driver for the SPv2 on their website--I got version 2.76, and there's a version 2.78 by the looks of it. Maybe I will uninstall the first one and try the later number. Fun stuff, this first day of a software release!

I have ShuttleProv2 driver v2.7.7 with Win 7 64x and I just imported the prefs from VP 10 and Shuttle pro runs fine. Are you sure loaded the right set of prefs? if yes, try v2.7.8.

TB, there are Shuttle Pro drivers in C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 10.0

I got the 2.78 driver from the Contour website, and I also imported the .pref file from the subdirectory in the Sony directory. Still not working correctly--but I don't know if that's the only issue here. For example, I *still* cannot get VP10 to play now, even after restarting the application with the SPv2 device unplugged. Something else is messed up here, but I don't have any more time to work on it tonight. The next step is going to be to uninstall VP10 and the SP, and manually delete any residual files. Then I will reinstall the program, but NOT install the Shuttle Pro device.

My current problems seemed to start after I installed the SPv2 drivers, which were not installed on Windows 7 when I first installed VP10 tonight. I have only had Windows 7 for a month or so now, and haven't had the occasion to use the Shuttle Pro on that OS yet; so I just never got around to installing it. But even though it doesn't work correctly now, VP10 did seem to work on first install tonight...after I tried to adjust the settings in the SPv2 control panel. The jog wheel never did work right, so I was trying to get it to work when VP10 stopped responded. It hasn't been the same since, so I think maybe a fresh install might help diagnose the problem.

Thanks for the help.

actually I experienced exactly the same behaviour a year ago when I switched to 64bit OS - with Vista on my laptotp as well as with Windows 7 on my desktop using Vegas Pro 9. It was resolved only after Contour released update to 64bit drivers.
I am using Shuttle Pro V1 with driver V2.7.7 and it is working fine with Vegas 10.
Now I changed to V2.7.8 and it is still working correctly.

First, my Shuttle Pro v2 is on my editing workstation and I haven't installed Vegas Pro 10.0a there, yet (I'm playing with 10.0a on my laptop until I get the energy to do the install).

That said, there is possibly another dimension to this problem. Were you aware that there are two versions of the Shuttle Pro v2? One is made in Taiwan and the other is made in China. The China made version is the "improved" version. Contour replaced mine for free. See: http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/forums/ShowMessage.asp?Forum=4&MessageID=720278

Well, I didn't know that, so thanks...

I am going to uninstall the SPv2 software tonight, and then restart the machine. If VP10 works normally, then I think that's the answer. If it still does not, then I will uninstall it and manually delete any residual directories and then reinstall VP10. The problem should be gone then, because that will essentially duplicate my initial VP10 install; prior to installing the Shuttle Pro.

If I can determine that this is an issue with the Shuttle Pro unit, I will try to exchange it. I believe my unit it almost two years old now, so it may well have been manufactured in Taiwan. I certainly bought it before the September 2009 date that Contour forum's moderator post mentions.

Thanks for the help.

TB,

Before you uninstall try resetting Vegas (Hold CTRL + SHIFT while launching launching Vegas) and see if that helps. You will have to reset your Vegas prefs.

BTW I have the earlier Shuttle Pro v2 and the only problem with the unit is that it will not allow Vista and win 7 screen saver to activate - nothing functional.

Edit: I installed Contour Driver v2.7.8 and everything runs fine.

Okay, I've installed 10.0a on my editing workstation and everything works just fine (using the Shuttle Pro v2 pref files from the Vegas 10 folder).

This probably has nothing to do with this issue, but humor me. Those folks who are having the problem, turn your Shuttle Pro V2 upside down and see if it says "Assembled in China'.

Good Luck!
