My Amd Athlon 1.33gig with 512 meg sdram locks up. Seems to be
related to Sound Forge 5.

Ctl+Alt+Del and "End Task" on everything in your task list except Explorer and Systray. Then start SF 5. If it doesn't lock up, it's not SF 5.

Or, you could reformat your hard drive, install only the OS and SF 5 and see if it locks up then.
