Hi, I have read about a standard measure unit called "LKFS" or "LUFS", mainly for broadcasting loudness. EBU (European Broadcasting Union) recommends -23 LUFS as loudness in all programs. As far as today, I've been using "dB RMS" to adjust the loudness in my audio files. Is there a conversion rule to know the "db RMS" equivalent of "-23 LUFS" ? Thanks. |

My limited understanding is that there being so much additional information (center of gravity, consistency, surround channels) going into the new standard, no direct correlations exist to dBRMS, although both start with a consistent dBFS (peak) reference. LUFS is more akin to AC3 dialog norm than conventional metering. "For a basic calibration and alignment check of signal level, a 1 kHz stereo sine-wave (signal applied in phase to both channels simultaneously), with peak-level at -18 dBFS, is recommended. The meter should read -18.0 LUFS." Why don't you read up on it and get back to us? http://www.aspen-media.com/uploads/attachments/EBU%20Tech3341%20Loudness%20metering%20supplement%20August10.pdf Message last edited on10/4/2010 9:10:45 AM bymusicvid10. |

The 'new' loudness measurement issues and tools have more of an impact on the networks and stations. For B'cast submissions, the networks are far more interested in reference tones and absolute peak levels... at least in my neck of the woods. (NYC) A lot has been written about it lately in the USA broadcast engineering publications, for instance "Broadcast Engineering" and "TV Technology". By all means, read up on it and enlighten us on your findings. I certainly do not understand the mathematical equations and such. BTW, The Dolby "Media Meter 2" looks useful though for pre-submission. |

While poking around, I just found the most amazing Beta set of LU / EBU / ITU meters at http://www.nugenaudio.com/visLM_loudness-meter_VST_AU_RTAS.php Oh, did I mention they are amazing? Message last edited on10/17/2010 2:40:39 PM bymusicvid10. |
