I'm starting to use Sound Forge XP 5.0 instead of Cool Edit 2000, and there is one thing I simply don't understand. Why is it that the program has these wonder, large, customizable play meters, but when you actually *need* them (when you are recording or finding levels for record), you are stuck with a tiny popup window with tiny little meters.

In Cool Edit 2000, recording takes place in the main window, with large meters, and the waveform actually gets drawn as it records.

Am I missing something here?

Nope! You are not missing anything! This is why I do my recording with Cool Edit. besides, CE will record 32-bit on the fly while with SF you must convert the file to 32-bit afterward.

I use SF 5.0 for the plug-ins, but Cool Edit is still the fastest for simple editing!

The zooming in and out also seems really cumbersome. I have to say I'm really surprised. I thought Version 5 would at least have the UI style of the newer products like Acid and Vegas. VideoFactory has an amazing scrolling widget, where you can drag to control the scroll slider's size, and with it the zoom factor. It's kind of hard to explain, but it's really fast and easy to use. Why is Sound Forge XP 5's UI (and I presume Sound Forge as well) so behind the curve?

They have put all of their energies into Acid, Vegas, and video.
