ACID Heads:
I'm trying to run Acid and Logic on a PC that has an AFLON (sp?) processor. It's a 900mhz plus I have a 10K rpm 18G SCSI hard-drive, 512 mg of ram, but I'm having latency problems big time. I can't even begin to add plug-ins without ACID dragging ass. I'm afraid there is something fundamentally wrong with my PC. I have the same problem when I'm trying to run LOGIC. I can't even record 1 track of audio without it falling apart. What's the deal? I'm new at this so talk to me like a beginner. If it's not the processor what could be my problem. The hard-drive is new and fast, the ram is jammed, the ribbons are all new. The only thing not new is the mother board and processor. Oh, and the sound card is new-MidiMan Delta 1010. That's all I know to tell ya. Any insights would be appreciated. Thanks

Tough one. Don't know the Delta 1010--assume you've selected all the right drivers in the optional spots. The Athlon is fine, my 1Ghz runs Acid great. Sometimes a full reload of Acid can help. Are you running Logic Audio at the same time? Always helps to clean up and defrag the HD and do all the systemic optimizations over at:

mAKE SURE YOU GET THE NEWEST DRIVERS FROM M-AUDIO EVEN IF YOU JUST BOUGHT THE CARD THAT WAS THE PROBLEM WITH MINE.

SORRY ABOUT THE CAPS I FORGOT I WAS WORKING IN AUTOCAD

Airstream- The specs on your computer seem OK. Make sure you don't have any programs running in the background (anti-virus software, MS Office installs a utility called Fast Find, screensaver etc.) I think the manual says only you should see Explorer and Systray when you press Control-Alt-Delete. Good Luck!

Here's some further advice on optimization from another site:

I can recommend some utilities that I use that will help you get the most from your machine. Most important of these is VOpt Me. It's a defrag program 100 times faster than the Windows default defragger. I use it very often and have found that even a slightly fragmented hard drive can make a big difference in cpu resources used. Next on the list of importance is Cacheman, which is a freeware program to help you optimize your swapfile. This makes a huge difference, especially when working with wav files.
Anyway, I'm sure you know about those, but a fairly recent program I've had a lot of success with is called Hare. It's a utility that let's your CPU focus up to 90% of it's resources on the current application, which isn't something Windows will do by default. Of course, the first and main thing to do to free up system resources is to Start>Run>msconfig, and disable any programs that load automatically at startup, save those you absolutely need (systray, scanreg).

Hello,

Make sure you have the newest drivers even if you just bought the card, go to M-Audio and get new drivers, and make sure your SCSI drivers are the newest also. Then adjust the buffers in both the programs and the sound card to get the best results.

See ya

Is optimizing your system discussed anywhere in the manual? I couldn't find anything.

I think the most important things are already said. All should run VERY smoothly with your configuration. There are some things you should try: Set the swapfile to an absolute minimum (32 MB). You don't need it with that much of RAM. Make sure you use the asio(2) drivers of your soundcard. That makes a lot of difference in the latency department. Partition your drive, keep a partition exclusively for recording, defrag it on a frequent basis and everytime you start a new project.
I have absolutely no problems with my PIII 500, 256MB Ram and 7200rpm drive. I already had projects with up to 18 tracks using several plugins.
Success, Bart
