I am using Sound Forge 10, with Windows 7 64 bit professional. Although I add the Disk name, artist, date, and insert CD tracks and give them names in SF 10, Windows Media Player (version 12) cannot read the names off the CD after it is burned. Although the tracks are individually recognised, and numbered, they have no text, and the disk has no other data, as far as WMP is concerned.

I do not have a CD player that recognises CD text, so cannot check whether track names have been burned. However, SF reads the track names on the CD if I use "extract audio from CD" in SF, so the names are there on the CD.

Why can WMP not read the track names? Am I missing something in compiling CD data?

It's not a question of why Media Player can't read the CD text, it's a question of why doesn't it. Apparently Microsoft decided it was better to retrieve media information over the 'net than to read it from the CD. *shrug* Their choice, for whatever their reasons were. Since it's unlikely that you're freshly burned CD has it's track information stored in the various popular online databases, there's no information for Media Player to fetch.

Thanks for your valued reply Chienworks. I guess this Microsoft decision will apply to any audio editor. I will have a try at creating CD tracks in Audacity, but it is probably a waste of time. I'll end up just manually inputting the disk and track data into WMP after ripping the CD.

Incidentally, I wonder if there is any method of transferring a compilation, complete with track and disk data directly to a Sony Walkman, without the cumbersome need to burn a disk, rip it to WMP, add track names manually, and then synch to the device. I have not tried any other medial players so far.

I don't know about the Walkman specifically, however when i shop for an MP3 player i will only choose one that offers the ability to be USB mounted as an external drive. This way i can load files into the player simply by dragging them in Windows Explorer over to the player's drive letter (possibly subdirectory too). I wouldn't ever install any software that comes with the player under any circumstances since they all seem to take over your system and alter too many file associations and settings.

To get the media information into the files i edit the ID3 tags as i create the .mp3 files in Sound Forge.

More often though i find myself too lazy to bother with the media information. I save the .mp3 file with a meaningful name, like "artist-album-track#-song_title.mp3" and skip the ID3 tags completely. The player shows the file name if it sees no ID3 tags and this is good enough for me. For that matter, really, how often do you look at that information while you're listening to the music anyway? The MP3 player in my living room sits under a shelf, running in shuffle mode 24x7 with about 2000 songs in it. When i turn on the receiver i hear music. I haven't actually touched or looked at the player in over a year. The only reason i'll do so in the future is to add more music to it.

Hi King Peter,

I take it you mean a Sony MP3/WMA Walkman, rather than a cassette, or Discman ?!!

To fill the data automatically from CD-TEXT info, you'll probably need to do the CD bit . Unless you do wish to manually put it the info where needed in gthe filename and meta-data, and save directly as a WMA to copy to your device.

Has not been said explicitly in this thread, but WMP does not read CD-TEXT, nor do most equivalent computer media players.

Dunno if this would be any help at all, but right in Windows Explorer you can right-mouse-button click on an existing .mp3 or .wma file, choose Properties / Summary / Advanced and see all the metadata fields. It's not obvious, but if you click on any field you can edit/enter text there. That may accomplish what's needed without any other steps, assuming the original files are already mp3 or wma.
