Subject:ACID use of memory?

In trying to optimize ACID 3.0 for use on my new laptop, I'm assuming that ACID pre-loads each loop that I'm using into memory. Is this true? This way the impact on system resource will not be drive access (like Vegas Audio) but rendering (effects, volume, mixing). True? Also I find that ACID 3.0 is very sensitive to any screen updates (causing glitching). How can I minimize this? My system is: PIII 700 MHz Dell Laptop Windows ME 192 MB RAM Thanks, BGC |

Hello, I think it's not true about the memory, I think it takes them from the disk that's why it demands such a fast and defragmented hard drive. And to fix the skipping problem try raising your buffer to about .75 to 1.25, and you could try lowering your video settings a notch down to 16 from 32 if that's what your set at. See ya |

I think Rockitglider is right. I ran 30 solid loop tracks with plugs on each one and the RAM usage was only 36/256. It woulda been alot more if it was all in RAM. It must stream from the hard drive. I have a dedicated Maxtor ATA 100 7200 audio drive with the temp file at the start of the disk. |

Gbat - I don't think your example is valid. If each loop is 200k - 500k bytes in size, then 30 tracks of loops would only require around 15 MB of RAM to store the loops. Well below what you list. Bgc |

From my perspective of using this software (in more ways then it should be used) it would not work correctly if there was streaming going on. The RAM is where the complete loop in placed. The math does not work out otherwise. ...I have more to say on the glitching part, I will right more in a bit... Petrified |

I stand corrected, the loops apparently reside in RAM. I think I was confusing them with Giga samples which stream from the hard drive. The loops aren't that big in Acid. So what is the hard drive temp file for? |

the temp directory on your harddrive is part of the new structure of acid 3.0. any temp files created by acid are supposed to be automatically deleted upon exit of the program. I think the temp files are there for the 'undo' function and also so you can recover your work if the system crashes. |

I think remember reading that the hard disk temp file is created when a loop is added to a project from removable media. In case the original source becomes inaccessible, ACID uses the temp file. Iacobus |

Hello, From what I read in the manual it uses both the hard disk and memory, because that's why it tells you to keep your hard drive defragged, but it also uses memory. one shots and beatmapped are streamed from hard disk for sure. See ya |
