howdy.. I'm trying to get adjusted to how Sound Forge works. I'm trying to record some old vinyl records, but the volume level comes out too loud when I record(lots of distortion). I don't have any way of lowering the output volume from my stereo's rca outputs (aside from using the headphone jack/volume control instead, & then I wind up with line noise, which I don't get otherwise), so I was wondering if there's anyway to control the level of volume input through sound forge. I tried manipulating the levels in the windows volume control, but apparently soundforge doesn't pay attention to that - which is a shame, because when I lower the mic volume, it sounds fine, right up until the point at which I play the recorded file back.

I understand that you can manipulate the volume of a file after you've recorded, but that doesn't resolve the distortion problem.

any advice?

thanks very much,

Chris

Hi Chris,

Actually, Sound Forge relies on Windows Volume Control in order to know what to record and how loud. Once you open Volume Control, go to Options -> Properties, select Recording, and press OK. The window will now show Recording Controls. Make sure that the Line In input is active and turned up. You might wish to leave this window open to adjust your audio volume once you are recording.
