Hey rocket, why is it that pro 3 requires so much more processor power? than 2.0 for the same tasks?

Hello,

You may have a problem with your CPU getting too hot, is there any way to get a temp reading on your CPU, either through BIOS or a utility that comes with Mother Board.

The problem is Acid uses alot of CPU power and the Atholon uses 2 times as much current as the Pentium and it can cause these kind of problems.

Is your computer home built or did you buy it assembled? The CPU fan is the suspect, it needs to be really good to cool an Atholon processor.

Let me know what you find out.

See ya

I was having the same black screen of death thing happen. Especially alot today. It is about 90 degrees and I do not have AC in this room. I would load a line and run it for about 3 minutes after booting up, and bang it would go south. So I used my MSI Temperature utilities and it was burning up ! It was right around 135 degrees F. So I opened up the case and put a fan on it to cool it down to around 111 on the processor and so far at this point it has not crashed yet. I will keep you up to date... Yes I did build my box, but I do not recall reading anywhere about having the right kind of fan on the processor... What do I do now besides wait until winter up here in Maine (which is not to far away..) Is there a more powerfull fan that I can install ? anywho let me know.

Thanks

I also have an Athlon (850 Mhz), and I have three fans to help cool it down. One for the CPU, one bringing air into the case from the front, and one pushing air out the back. I've never had problems with overheating.
Check out some retailers in your area for some, they are really cheap, and there's different kinds depending on your needs and applications (hard-drive fans, for example).
Athlons are renowned for running hotter than Pentiums, but with proper cooling, you shouldn't have any problems.
Hope this helps...

Well here is an update...

062901

Have the chassis open right now blowing a fan into it. The CPU temperature is 104 F
the chassis temp is 89 F. I load up ACID 3.0 I run a song for about 5 minutes and
bang! black screen of death. I have nothing running on startup except the PC Alert III
Monitor from MSI. I have a MSI K7T Pro 2A 1.3 Mhz Motherboard. It has the VIA KT133
chipset. It is an AMD Athlon / Duron processor.

I am not sure what the optimum temperature needs to be...

2 other crashes I had tonight:

1. The timeline was going along, than the audio got digitally "stuck" and was repeating itself
over and over. I could not do Ctrl-Alt-Del. The whole system hung up with the "stuck"
audio driving my ears nuts. This error has not repeated itself yet.

2. The other error was the timeline was going along and than I got the famouse blue screen
of death with a Fatal Exception Error 06 and some hex number I forgot to write down.
This has not happened again.

The black screen of death no mercy crash has happened 5 times tonight. 3 times with the
temperature only around 105 F. Not sure what is up here. This error has happened with
both the Nvidia TNT2 card and the ATI Wonder card. I have tried both, with the same error.

All of these errors happened just this night using Acid 3.0. I have, as I said disabled all of the startup stuff. It is quite a clean system. Not sure
what to do.

Is 105 Degrees F. a resonable temp to run this at ?

-desparate.

OK Your CPU temp is good a high temp would be and higher but is good to stay at 110 degrees or lower. Maybe you should try updating your video card to latest drivers. Also if you have a friend that has Norton Utilities you can run the utilities from the disk without installing the program and it cleans up any active X garbage and generally makes your system run better. One other thing is to get the CPU temp reading after running Acid with a complex song for a few minutes to see if that makes any change.

>OK Your CPU temp is good a high temp would be and >higher but is good to stay at 110 degrees or lower. >Maybe you should try updating your video card to >latest drivers.

Last night ran the machine at under 100 degrees and this time it crashed to the blue screen message. Next time I will write that one down.

The video card drivers are the latest. I have tried 2 differant video cards and both give the same errors. I feel like I am getting closer to the solution...

> Also if you have a friend that has Norton Utilities >you can run the utilities from the disk without >installing the program and it cleans up any active X >garbage and generally makes your system run better.

I will give this one a try. The cleaner the system the better ! Thanks.

> One other thing is to get the CPU temp reading after >running Acid with a complex song for a few minutes to >see if that makes any change.

Did this one. It gets to around 102 to 110 when running a long timeline.

Thanks for the help. If you or anyone else has any more suggestions would appreciate the tips.
