I have a lot of MONO recordings, and I noticed that the highest Bit rate I can encode in is 128K which I like because I want the best quality that’s closest to the original WAV file. However, If I have a STEREO recording my choices for Bit rates are much higher. Can I assume that if I choose 256K bit rate (128K for each channel) that I am going to achieve that same high quality as my MONO recordings are encoded? What’s with the settings that I see that are Transparent Audio Bit rates that’s even higher than 256K? |

The 128Kbps setting being the maximum for mono is part of the mp3 spec, as I understand it. Yes, 256Kbps would definitely give you high-quality encoding for your stereo files. I typically use 160Kbps, and I can rarely tell the difference between that kind of mp3 and the same song in a .wav. 320Kbps should preserve just about everything and be indistinguishable from a CD track. However, higher settings like this result in greater file size. |
