Subject:44khz vs 48 khz and hiss problem

Using softencode i can create a 5.1 mix and preview or play the ac3 file into my external decoder, but when I either use 44khz source files or attempt to output to wav I cannot listen to them and all I get is hiss. When i use 48khz source files i can both preview from within softencode or output ac3 format file to listen, but not wav. what am i missing here?
