Subject:Upgrade to ACID Pro 7?

I want to upgrade from ACID Pro 6 to 7 but I'm concerned that if I upgrade now then version 8 might be released in the next few months and I'll have to pay for a new upgrade again. Sony have just released ACID Music Studio 8 which leads me to believe that a pro update might be imminent.

I've held off upgrading partly due to financial reasons and also because my UAD-1 and Powercore cards work so well with ACID Pro 6. I'm worried that v7 might not work as well with my DSP cards. Also, my PC is based around an old AMD X2 4200 (socket 939) processor and I'm concerned that ACID Pro 7 might not be as cpu efficient as v6.

Perhaps I'm wrong about all this but if anyone has any experience of using UAD-1 and Poco cards with ACID Pro 7 then perhaps they would advise me.

I recently upgraded Sonar to v8.5 as part of a low price upgrade offer but I still prefer ACID and won't change to Sonar. I also tried the Ableton 8 demo and found that uninspiring compared to ACID. The reason I mention this is that I hope Sony don't change ACID's interface too much with version 8. ACID just seems to suit my way of working although if it incorporated some of the loop manipulation options that Ableton 8 has then I wouldn't complain.

One option I'd love to see in ACID 8 is the ability to convert audio loops into midi loops. I mean single instrument rather than multi instrument audio loops. If I could convert an audio bass line or a drum loop into midi then I could assign different sounds to the loop. That would be incredibly useful.

acid works good with uad.... i never got powercore to work good with acid but that was acid4/5.

cpu is about the same as a6... maybe even less because of freeze...

I would love audio to midi in acid and better support artillery,the finga, aand effectrix.

Sonar can do that with Audio Snap. Cruise on over to the Cakewalk Sonar forums - the people over there will be glad to help. Or you could use the search function there first - this has been dealt with before. I have to ask: you got a low-price upgrade to Sonar 8.5 but you won't change to it from Acid. Why'd you put out money for what's a superior product and won't use it? There's nothing that says you can't use multiple daw software - lots of people do that.

Thanks both of you for your replies. I wasn't aware that Sonar could turn audio to midi which is a great feature. I upgraded Sonar because the offer was so cheap (less than a lot of plugins) and I wanted to use Vocal V. Even though I feel more comfortable with Acid that doesn't mean I don't think Sonar is an accomplished piece of software that suits the way others work.

I actually didn't hear a valid reason for the upgrade - you don't mention a feature that you need in 7 that warrants the upgrade for you. As it seems that way to me, maybe it is better to wait for version 8 and upgrade then if the new features warrant the upgrade.

The main reason I wanted to get on 7 was the input monitoring options that were missing from previous versions.

I tried the ACID Pro 7 demo and found that the glitches, drop outs and crashes I experienced in ACID Pro 6 running a project with lots of plugins went away. I've just upgraded to 7 for this reason. It seems to have a much more stable audio engine than 6 on my system and it works extremely well with my UAD-1 and Powercore cards so far. Even if 8 comes out in the next month or two I won't regret it because I got quite a bit of extra content with the upgrade too.
