It can't be done
It can't be done
It can't be done
It can't be done
It can't be done

Where are people getting the idea that this can be done?

Someone asked this same question on this forum a week ago. I see this question pop up on another manufacturer's message board all the time!

YOU CANNOT DO THIS UNLESS YOU HAVE EITHER THE MULTITRACKS OR A SRECIALLY PREPARED TRACK MINUS THE VOCALS!

Sheesh!!!!

Well, it can be done, people do it all the time.

It works on the fact that vocals are mixed to L+R channel to sound center. If you subtract all the info that is exactly the same on L and R, what you remove is mostly vocals. Not perfect but very close. Also you then notch out the 2.5 KHz band and the vocals are usually at least 30 db down.
Try it, it's fun

There is a free Vocal Remove DirectX plug in from AnalogX. This runs with Sound Forge 5.0 (full version) or Acid Pro. It is not perfect and they explain how it will remove certain types of vocals that are mixed in a certain way (monophonic is the term they use). For example on Call and Answer by Barenaked Ladies it perfectly removed the vocals. On Vienaa by Ultravox it did not remove anything it just screwed up the sound of the file.

It's free so it does not hurt.
