I tried different avi's, some with no sound. They all open with the windows media player. That's updated. I remember sound forge used to be able to open them, but haven't tried in a long time. Must be because of this divx thing I got lately... or maybe just the updataing the media player. somebody e-mail me about this because it's pretty much a dead end. I searched thru all this site, and seen a few posts but not really any answers. Not really anywhere on the net as well. Like if I need a codec, which one?

And you're correct; installing other codecs (especially something like DivX, which is beta, I believe) can cause issues with opening .avi files in Forge. That's updated.

You'll need to find out what codec the .avi file needs. There's no way for us to be sure on this end. And you're correct; installing other codecs (especially something like DivX, which is beta, I believe) can cause issues with opening .avi files in Forge.
