Is it possible to make an MP3 file with a bit depth of 8 bits or 24 bits. The only thing Sound Forge MP3 codec seems to support is 16 bit. Is this a limitation of the MP3 codec or is 16 bit the only bit depth that MP3 supports? I am trying to make an 8 bit MP3 file for testing purposes. I tried converting the wave file to 8 bits, but it converts it to 8 bit once I save it as an MP3....same thing with 24 bit. |

Hello, Yes you can do your save to MP3 then go to process and select Bit Depth Converter and Convert it to 8 bit. You can also find resample in the same menu See ya |

I believe you are wrong in your assumptions. I am very aware on how to convert to the different bit depths and sample rates. When you save it changes it back to 16 bit. Try your method that you suggested and then after you saved to an 8 bit file goto the File>open and then just click on that file once. It will list all the properties of that file and you will see that your file is not 8bit....it is 16 bit. I'm also having the same problem trying to save to a 96Khz sampling rate. It converts it back to 44.1Khz. I need some help here. I'm trying to do some engineering testing on a 6 disk DVD car changer that the company I work for is developing. We are currently in a beta testing stage of the product and I need to throw every imaginable type of MP3 format at it to see if it supports them all. SF engineering....do you have any info on this? Unfortunately I'm not all that educated in the MP3 file format to no it's specifications yet. Thanks, Brian Franz |

Hey Brian, All mp3 files are 16-bit. There is no such thing as an 8-bit or 24-bit mp3 file. Ted |

Thanks Ted, that's what I suspected. Regards, Brian Franz |
