Captured footage came out strange

ReneH wrote on 6/4/2010, 6:27 PM
Hello! All,

I captured some footage today and apart from some dropped frames, when I placed on the timeline somthing weird happened.

The footage came out like it is overcranked, speedied up if you will.

What did I do wrong? I believe the video was captured in 60i if that helps. I captured it with Scenalyzer and dumped it on the Vegas timeline. I don't recall if I tried capturing with Vegas, but stopped because of too much dropped frames.

Any suggestions?

Silly question.

What kind of "footage?"
Source?
Framerate?

Provide some details, please.
ReneH wrote on 6/4/2010, 6:45 PM
Yikes! Sorry.

Captured at 29 fps, from a DVX100A Panny, minidv tape.

I am not sure what I did wrong. Tried several pulldowns but to no avail.

have you matched project properties to footage?
musicvid10 wrote on 6/4/2010, 7:22 PM
If you captured DV in Scenealyzer, everything should be fine in Vegas. I've never had a problem.

Can you upload a short clip of your captured footage somewhere?

Your dropped frames bother me. It should never happen. Do you know what "Enable DMA" means? What operating system? Hard drives?

"The footage came out like it is overcranked, speedied up if you will."

Overcranked would give you slow motion. If it was speeded up then it would look as undercranked.

What interface were you using for the capture ? firewire or usb ? I use scenalyzer all the time for DV and have never had a problem -- one of the few utilities that just seems to always work.

I have seen this happen occasionally when the capture was started at the very beginning of a tape before the video was "locked up" and stable. This is just standard DV and you really shouldn't be getting dropped frames unless the tape is bad, your machine is busy doing something in the background or it's just too slow. Typically Scenalyzer is bullet-proof.

Hello! All

Just logged on.

I uploaded some footage, it was a favor to a friend, some wrestling going on.

I captured via firewire, and used scenalyzer. I agree scenalyzer is great and I almost always never get dropped frames with it.

"have you matched project properties to footage?"

I tried several pulldowns, especially the correct one. I will try to capture again again and try other pulldowns. I'm wondering what the heck I did when I shot the video!

I turned off antivirus as I was capturing just to make sure. Tried to match media settings before importing to Vegas but that didn't help.

Footage of the clip is here, I hope 66 megs doesnt deter you from downloading!:

Is that the footage you got out of Scenealyzer?

The clip you posted says it is DVCPRO, and not DV NTSC.
It appears to be 24p that was captured wrong.

How the heck did my settings get altered in my Panny dvx00a?

Recapturing with Scenalyzer should correct this? What settings in scenalyzer? Thanks for your response, it really helps.

Right..
I downloaded clip, brought into VP9(e), matched project properties to clip and didn't see anything strange in playback. Looked correct speed to me.

Tom,

What settings did you use specificall? I'm having the time of my life trying to get this right!

Right. "Match media settings" in Vegas seems to report it correctly. However, MediaInfo reports 29.97i. So some flags got jumbled during capture.

Rene, Search these exact words "Match Media Settings" and you will find out how to do this.
ReneH wrote on 6/5/2010, 11:12 AM
Actually, I tried that setting on Vegas before importing to the timeline and vegas refuses to correct the footage to 29 fps. Vegas uses "NTSC DV 24p (720x480, 23.976 fps)" pulldown as the properties.

When I try to use another template, something like "NTSC DV (720x480, 29.970 fps)" Vegas crashes as I try to import the media that way. Dunno why Vegas crashes with this pulldown. Also tried "NTSC Standard (720x486, 29.970 fps)" and again Vegas crashes.

What gives? Tape was bad? I have had this tape in my cabinet for like 2 years now. Could that be the problem?

This is the error Im getting when I do a Match media Setting and I also changed the fps to 29 ivtc:

Rene, that's what your footage is -- 23.976p, and you shouldn't be trying to "correct" it to anything else in Project Properties, because there isn't anything to correct. Look at the properties you posted. Vegas got it right. I checked the frame boundaries.

If you want it to be DV NTSC 29.97i, you will have to render it that way, which is fraught with its own set of issues, that you may not be comfortable dealing with.

If you are going to make a DVD, leave it the way it is and render to the appropriate DVD Architect template, which in your case is "DVD Architect 24p NTSC video stream"

Rene,
I brought clip into Vegas.

Then 'File', 'Properties' to bring up 'Project Properties' dialog.

In the dialog, click on the folder icon (top right) and then in the explorer click on your clip and then 'Apply'.

Now your project properties will match the clip properties.

Then you listen to musicvid's advice. He's 100% correct. Do not try to correct anything.

Tom,

I did that. It seems that when I try to make the adjustments Vegas crashes with the error I posted above.

Could it be the aviplug.dll file that is somehow corrupted?
musicvid10 wrote on 6/5/2010, 12:01 PM
1) Match media settings
2) Don't make adjustments

We are both trying to tell you, the best way we know how, that there is nothing to adjust.
rs170a wrote on 6/5/2010, 12:06 PM
ReneH, listen to these guys.
I downloaded the clip, matched the media settings and had no problems playing it in both Pro 8 & Pro 9.

Sorry to persist!

Musicvid, Guys

I understand what you are saying, I have not made ANY adjustments. I did exactly as instructed but Vegas keeps crashing when I open the clip.

I believe the error in question is related to the aviplug.dll ?

"This is the error Im getting when I do a Match media Setting and I also changed the fps to 29 ivtc:"

We were going by your statements. Are you telling us now that it's something else?
Sorry, I'm unable to duplicate your crash in Vegas 8.0c, so I'll have to check out of this discussion. I hope you find a solution.

Musicvid,

I do the Match Media Settings and I DO NOT make any adjustments as insturcted. This is the error:

Apparently, Vegas crashes after this. What gives?
musicvid10 wrote on 6/5/2010, 12:28 PM
You could reboot your machine and also try a fresh copy of your file.
Sorry, I didn't pick up on anything about your exception until your sixth post and I am unable to reproduce it, no matter how I set the properties.
I don't have 9.0e, so I can't speculate beyond that.
Tom Pauncz wrote on 6/5/2010, 12:50 PM
Rene,
I duplicated your problem. I think it's the sequence in which you do this.

Try this:
1. Open new Vegas project
2. Import clip
3. Match project properties to clip
4. Drag clip to timeline.

I get no crash this way.

If I try:
1. Open new Vegas project
2. Match project properties to clip
3. Import clip
4. Drag to timeline - crash repeatable

I suggest you open a case with SCS support.

Tom
