Subject:Vegas to compliment ACID Pro?

I read an article in Mix last month and the guy in the studio spotlight said he used Vegas as his main DAW. I downloaded the Vegas manual and skimmed it and it looks pretty much like ACID Pro to me. Are there other pressing reasons to use Vegas as a supplement to ACID? (in an audio setting that is). Does it handle mixing differently than ACID?

Thanks!

I use Vegas as my main DAW. There are features that make it better for straightforward audio recording and the way I work. It also lacks some desirable features of Acid.

Features where Vegas beat Acid + event alignment, and slightly less cluttered GUI (not that either are praticularly cluttered ) included event alignment tools, and the advanced video editing and burning functions.

What Vegas misses - Folder Tracks, Any form of MIDI track playback.

Sound quality - no difference that I can perceive, and certainly nothing that isn't totally swamped by the difference in moving your head a few inches !

Forget about Vegas for loops or midi - not supported at all.

Loops and MIDI are the bulk of what I do so Vegas won't usurp ACID for me.

Are the mixing tools any different in Vegas? ACID still seems to be a little weak in this area. If I get into video then adding Vegas is a no brainer.

Thanks for your input Geoff!

Vegas has essentially the same mixing capabilities. ACID has more options because it has input busses and better overall control of sends from busses.

I am curious as to what you consider weak about ACID's mixing?

sidechaining seems to be lacking. I haven't really dug too deeply into setting up mixes yet. I may just need to make another trip through the manual.

Thanks for the input Peter!

Using Vegas for audio work is nothing new for pro engineers. It's great for making audio edits.

I read on another forum where a person likes to use Acid for mixing because of the GUI.

As I always understood it, ACID Pro is more of a musician's tool as Vegas is for video pros (though there are pro audio tools in Vegas, like audio mixing, for example).

It's like how Sound Forge compliments them both with its extensive set of audio editing tools. Having all three and learning to use them well would make one a multimedia powerhouse.

I think it depends on your starting point.

If you are doing a video project, Vegas still provides a superb environment for audio work (sound track, sound design). For straight audio recording, Vegas is also excellent.

If you are doing a composition project (straight music or maybe scoring a finished video project), then Acid allows you to take full advantage of the power of loops. Vegas will play loops, but you don't have access to facilities like key and tempo changes.

I have often had both open to create music for video, render, then review in Vegas. (It would be nice if it could be done without an intermediate render step, but I an not sure how that would be done.)

In terms of the interface, I think that Vegas has one of the best interfaces around -- that was one of the things that drew me to it in the first place. There may be other applications that are as good, but I have yet to see one that is better.

Ciao,
