Rick, Vegas 8.1 was a beta that was released to showcase 64 bit, but it's very unstable and buggy, you would be much better off using 8.0c

As it turns out, I am actually using 8.0c. I have the 8.1 update but apparently never installed it.

I also see that this problem is being reported on quite a few other web sites with no definitive answers. Nothing on SONY's site though.

I am experiencing same problem. whenever I try to open MP4, Vegas crash. I am using windows XP 32 bit. Vegas 8.0c I have quick time 7 pro installed in my PC

I have tested a couple of files that had this error, and running them through AVIDemux in straight copy mode fixed them.

Give it a try and report back. Also upload an original clip somewhere if you can.

What Quicktime version do you have installed?

I was using Itunes 9.1. I downgraded to 8. Still it didn't worked. I couldn't get AVIDemux to work. So what I did was, downloaded the trial version of Corel VideoStudio Pro X3 and converted the video into AVI. Then opened in Vegas. Looks like Vegas is not fully compactable with mp4 files
