Subject:How To: Record Automated Effect Tweaking (In...)

I thought that MIDI track was pretty useless untill I discovered how to record automated filter/effects controll etc. I only discovered it tonight, and I'm sure there is more potential here...

First you need Fxpansion's VST-DX Adapter 3.0 Standard Edition (www.fxpansion.com), and Sonic Foundry's Virtual Midi Router.

Once you have your VST effects converted to DX and loaded properly in Acid, select a track's effect chain and choose one of the VST effects. There is a small button in the Fxpansion/VST effect's shell here for midi controll input. Choose an appropiate midi input port here, and you can tweak stuff live by playing with the mod wheel or whatever on an external synth etc.

Here's how to record an automated track that will do this for you:

1. Select a track that want to record some effects tweaking on. Select the effect chain and choose one of the VST effects (I chose something simple at first, like JS Band Cut). Choose a midi input for the effect. Try by starting with SF Virtual Midi 1

2. Exit the effects section, and go to Acid preferences. Goto the MIDI tab and make sure all the appropiate midi devices are enabled. In the "MIDI Thru device for recording" box, choose SF Virtual Midi 1 (or whatever you chose in the above step)

3. Hit the record button and check the MIDI track box. Choose as Record Device (source) the midi port that your controller data is coming from (ie. In-A USB MidiSport 2x2 etc).

4. As you record you should be able to hear the effect being modulated. Depending on your hardware, the delay or latency will be either tolerable or horrible.

5. When you're finished recording you will have a midi track that contains all the controller messages routed to the effect. You might have to choose the map to SF Virtual Midi 1 again from the midi track preferences you just recorded to. You can chop the midi track up and copy/paste etc, just like when working with an audio track.

If it sounds confusing, it's really not. The above is for track effect controll, but I'm sure it will also work in the master effects section or effects bus.

An alternative to recording the controll data in Acid is to import a midi file that already contains some messages. Just route everything correctly and it should sound pretty good :)
