Is there any way to change the patch or soft synth by which midi files are played when they are previewed through Explorer. Most midi files I try are played back as a piano sound ( I presume it is using the 1st piano patch on the DLS softsynth?) As a specific example, I have acess to 100's of midi drum files. It would be very helpful to preview these played using a midi drum kit.

Previewing MIDI files through the ACID explorer assumes that the MIDI file is authored for General MIDI. The preview is always played through the DLS soft-synth that is part of ACID.

In your particular case, this means the drums need to be on MIDI Channel 10 for the preview to work correctly.

ACID does not permit you to re-channel a MIDI file from the explorer.
