Sounds obvious, but Imagine that you are new to Sony Creative Software and new to computer editing instead of cutting film.
That said, what is ACID Pro?
Sony, like so many others, knows all about their product and assumes that so does the potential customer so they fail to say the obvious. Instead they jump to words like samples and loops, and so on. Never taking the time to explain that this is what you can do with this product-
You can take a basis score or tune, you can add layers of other tracks of instruments, you can change the length. Actually, I am guessing at all I just wrote because I have no idea if that is what they are promoting. They never bother to explain and illustrate the obvious to them but not to someone new to the software.

ACID Pro software. Think "multi-track tape recorder" in your PC.

If you don't know, and can't understand the comprehensive product description, then Acid probably isn't something that is relevant to you. So don't stress.

I had similar questions when I started. I come from an animation background and wanted a simple program to make short music soundtracks. I knew none of the jargon, only that a friend recommended Acid, as did many reviewers.

The best way to understand is to try it. It's super easy to get started and get the feel of the program. Download the free version of Acid here:

http://www.acidplanet.com/downloads/xpress/

(It's really free, never expires)

Then download some free loops and sample projects every week here:

http://www.acidplanet.com/downloads/8packs/

Then simply play with it and follow some of the tutorials. I'm guessing that if you're interested in something similar to what you described, you will be hooked, and you'll learn the lingo and the capabilities really quick. If you like it you can get the relatively cheap Acid Music Studio. Maybe you'll even go as far as I have, and start enjoying the music side more than the film editing side of things. I even started purposely writing scripts that incorporated songs, so that I could compose and produce them using Acid.

I know I haven't told you "what it is", but that was answered above. You can figure that out in under an hour if you play with the free version. One thing I guarantee you: unlike a lot of media-related software, Acid is really easy to learn.

It's an amazing program. It does almost all the technical work of keeping segments of music in key and in tempo. Frankly, it's magic. Get yourself some.

Mims said "Sony, like so many others, knows all about their product and assumes that so does the potential customer"

And they assume correctly. A potential customer would know what their product is.
