I've tried registering/activating using the machine ID and serial number I have, but it tells me:

The server was unable to complete the registration as requested. [-41]

Both in the web version of the process as well as the one that comes up when you start it for the first time.

I can't run it even in trial mode!

The same here. Additionally I have re-formatted a disk and had a "fresh" OS copy installed. I installed SF9 and was never able to run it because of server's inability. Customer Service has never replied. Sorry, I don't like it very much. I have bought Acid 7 and going to install too, but it seems there will be the same issue. Somebody help?

Code "-41" seems to be the response for when you've used up all the activations that you're allowed. Normally a quick call to customer service explaining why you're installing it again is sufficient for them to reset the counter and let you get more activations.
