Subject:Move/recover DX plugin chains/presets

I have a hard drive that has been on the shelf for a while. It is a Windows XP system disk, with program files on it, etc., including Sound Forge and a bunch of plugin chain presets as well as individual plugin presets. These are custom presets I made, which I don't want to lose. It's not day-to-day use stuff, just stuff I need archived for a client, plus maybe some other "lost" fun stuff of mine.

I want to start using the drive again (i.e. format it), so I am wondering: if I want to one day recover these presets, do I have to keep this drive in a bootable state -- so that the particular Sound Forge/Acid/dx plugins install information/configuration is perfectly preserved -- or can I just image the drive, not worry about preserving its bootability, and recover the preset/chain data in some "generic" way from just the raw folders/files themselves. (The GUID-named folders, etc.)

Any info would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Edit:

To phrase the whole thing differently: Other than booting from the drive, and using Preset Manager to save the presets, and then importing those saved packages into my current system install, is there any 100% complete and reliable way to transfer these presets/chains from one machine/install to another?

Thanks for reading.
