Subject:Volume Boost for quiet sections

SURELY I must be missing something here!! I've got a live
recording with some speech between the songs, some of which
is very quiet. All I want to do is boost the quiet sections
whilst leaving the louder bits alone (e.g. over a -12db
threshold). If I use compression heavy enough to boost the
quiet bits, the music is heavily compressed un-neccesarily.
The closest I've come is by using dynamic compression with
a 'flattened' graph below -12db and 1:1 compression above,
but it's FAR from perfect. There MUST be a way, either in
Sound Forge or via a plug-in, to automatically tweak the
volume on quiet sections only. Any help or suggestions will
be GREATLY appreciated!!

Have you tried the Volume tool under the Processor menu?

Simply select the offending section and use the volume
fader to increase or reduce the gain of just the selected
section.

Much better than trying to compress the whole enchilada.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply. Unfortunately the volume of the quiet
sections fluctuates way too much (and there are too many of
them!) to use manual volume changes. Also, manual changes
would result in volume 'jumps' between sections which would
sound a bit naff. I'm hoping there's some equivilent of AGC
(Automatic Gain Control) available as a plug-in, but I
haven't found anything yet. Any further ideas will be more
than welcome!

There is a Sonic Foundry DirectX plug-in (from the XFX
line, I think) called "Graphic Dynamics" that does exactly
what you are asking for: set a threshold below which the
level is boosted by any ratio you choose. It works great on
speaking parts.
