how are you suppose to configure and use these files?
do I just load them or paint them into a track and assign a VST.
can I use any VSt or does it have to be the instrumenst that come with Acid Pro?
all I get is a piano sound when I preview these clips.

MIDI is just a set of instructions to be interpreted by whatever soft synth you throw the MIDI file through. It can be practically any soft synth. (e.g., ARIA for ACID Pro or KitCore, both of which come with ACID Pro 7.)

ON EDIT: If you load/add a MIDI file to your project before a soft synth, I believe ACID will use the default DLS Soft Synth. If you're looking to use another synth, make sure it's inserted into your project. You can switch to your desired synth using the button in the track's listing or in the Mixer.

These MIDI files are authored for specific sound sets for use in the Sony GM DLS soft-synth.

There are projects associated to them so you can determine the dls sound set they use. There are no direct links between the mid file and the DLS sound set they use.

If you load the sample projects that use these mid files, the DLS sound set will load correctly.

You can load the DLS sound set into any ACID project that has an instance of the Sony GM DLS soft-synth. This procedure is described in the ACID users manual.
