Subject:distorted phasy sound when recording guitar

I recently figured out how to hook my guitar up to my computer, I am doing the cheap way by going through the line in, 1/4 in. to 1/8 in adapter and can play clean through the speakers. It actually sounds decent. I got acid from my buddy and decided just to mess around with it. when I started to record and listen back. The recording sounded distorted and would go in and out as if it had a phaser effect on it. I also have audacity the free program and tried it there and got the same thing. Why when I record it does it distort and phase in and out when it sounds good while not recording

Could be one of many things mate, and If I waffle on your probably won't understand. You NEED a dedicated audio interface of some description...and BUY Acid too.

What's the signal flow of the guitar signal? (e.g., guitar > effects processor > audio interface. Would also help to know the cables used. Having cables near electronic sources can produce unwanted noise.)

It sound like you are monitoring/recording through both ACID and the sound card. You need to configure the sound card so that it does not record "what you hear".

You don't say which sound card you are using in your profile or here.

They are all very different.

Typically the soundcard comes with a mixer or config tool. I would recommend that you look at the card's docs.

I would look for something in the record section configuration labeled "What you hear" or similar.
