Subject:SF-10a Weird File saving problem

Although I bought SF V 10 while the discount offer was still on, I have only just installed it and this is my first use. I had about a dozen seven minute files from audio tracks of a small amateur film, exported from Vegas 9.0 a. I was mostly working on noise reduction. It was all excellent. However, when I saved my first file, the save bar went to 100% almost immediately. SF then seemed to hang. It took ages. After about 40 seconds or so, the whole screen went white and all I could see was the blue bar at the top. I tried to run WindowsTask Manager, but it seemed to hang as well. Suddenly, everything would clear and the saved file would be there and all would be well. As this was happening with every file, I started running the Windows Task Manager immediately I did a save. Sometimes it would operate quickly enough for me to see that the message for Sound Forge was that it was not responding. However, in every case, it eventually did respond and the file was saved properly. This was consistent with every file. After having done the first save of a file, any other edits followed by a save went very smoothly and very rapidly with no problems at all. So, has anyone else experienced this phenomenon? Why does the first save take so long, or possibly, happen almost immediately, but then hang for about 40 seconds? Anyone? Regards, Noggle |

Could be several things: How full is the hard drive you're working with? How fragmented is the hard drive? Have you defragged the drive lately? You could be low on ram thereby Windows hits the swap file and that's running out of space. You could have a lot of unnecessary processes running in the background. Wireless networks have been known to intefere with the smooth running of various computer processes. Your hard drive could have went into sleep or hibernation mode. Do you have an anti-virus program running in the background? Jack |

Hi Jack, Thanks for your reply. > How full is the hard drive you're working with? Masses of space left. > How fragmented is the hard drive? Very nicely defragged. > Have you defragged the drive lately? Yes. > You could be low on ram thereby Windows hits > the swap file and that's running out of space. Possibly, but not likely. Coming from the days of 300 MHz cpus, 9GB drives, 4Meg RAM, and so on, I'm a fanatic about these things. > a lot of unnecessary processes running in the background. Often true - this is not a dedicated computer. I switch them off when I need to. I have just not had this trouble with earlier versions of SF (on the same computer). > Wireless networks have been known to interfere Had one for over a year with no problems so far. > hard drive could have went into sleep or hibernation mode. No, it was alive and well. > Do you have an anti-virus program running in the background? When I am doing something intensive, I disconnect my network/internet cable and turn off all unnecessary background processes using DTaskManager. It's more powerful than the ordinary Windows Task Manager and it is dangerous enough to turn anything off if you don't know what you are doing. Thanks for your help. Regards, Noggle |
