Subject:Just so you know!

So I load Acid Pro 7 demo (haven’t purchased it yet) and up comes the demo tune called ‘Just So You Know’.

I mute all tracks excluding the oboe and hit play. Nice.

I locate the oboe wav file in the Acid stratup folder and play it with VLC player. Not so nice.

Played in Acid Pro 7 the oboe sounds different; richer, further away. So I close Acid Pro 7 and open a new instance. I load the oboe from Bandstand and play the same tune (more or less), render the file as a wav and pop it in beside the oboe in the ‘Just So You Know’ instance and play the two oboe wav files in Acid Pro 7 for comparison.

My oboe file in Acid Pro 7 sounds just like the oboe file from ‘Just So You Know’ file played in VLC so I’m concluding that a Acid Pro 7 is doing something to the oboe wav file, a setting related to that track perhaps, that I don’t know about. So I delete the original in the Just So You Know and substitute mine. It sounds just like the original. So seems like a track property setting perhaps.

What’s going on here, do you think?

(I have the Acid Pro 7 training video on the way)

It's a bit hard to know exactly what you are doing from your description. For example, I don't know what you mean by "load the oboe from Bandstand" or "pop it in beside the oboe".

But I think what you are asking is why does the oboe track in "Just So You Know" sound different from the oboe.wav file on its own? The reason is that this track is routed via a bus where some effects are applied - the difference you are noticing is probably mainly reverb, and perhaps some EQ.

Thanks Mark; exactly. Why was I not so concise and precise. I figured something has been changed but I’ve yet to figure it out. I looked at the track bus properties and that was no help. But I’m kind of groping in the dark even though I’m somewhat competent with Vegas Pro. When I click on Track FX I’m informed ‘no Plug-ins in Chain’. It’s all a steep learning curve for me right now. I have the Sony training DVD’s on the way and I’m thinking until they arrive down here I should stop asking stupid questions. But you know how it is, new toys, love playing around…

It’s just that the oboe in ‘Just so you know’ sounds soo sweet (compared to the wav file) I would love to understand how it was modified in order that I might replicate that sound.

Training DVD’s; FedEx, where are ya?

If memory serves, the orchestral instruments in that project are all routed through an effects bus... so even though the Track FX shows there are no plug-ins being used, the bus that the track is routed to does have plug-ins in its chain.

Your memory serves you well, Riceprod, and I thank you for that; I found it. The key plug-in that is doing it is reverb.

The training DVD’s are due here Tuesday. Can’t wait.

Thanks again

John
