A month ago I reported a bug in the fade in/fade out feature - not the tool under the Process menu, but the feature that blends the edges of a selection when an effect is applied. I first discovered this bug while using the Smooth/Enhance tool - when applied to a selection (i.e. not the whole file), it amplifies the edges of the selection. With four repeated applications of Smooth/Enhance it amplifies the edges to clipping. The problem doesn't happen if I set the fade-in/fade-out times to zero. I found the problem also happens with the graphic equalizer. I originally reported this problem on October 30. A tech support representative asked me to give them a project file demonstrating the problem, which I did on November 3. SInce then I haven't heard anything from Sony. This bug is a show-stopper for me - I won't be able to use 10.0 until it is fixed. Has anyone else run into this problem? Can anyone at Sony tell me the status of this bug? |

Have you tried changing the curves to linear fades? With certain effects that do not significantly modify phase, short fades with the default fast/slow curves can add gain. J. |

I just tried it with linear fade-in/fade-out and it solved the problem. Thanks! Can you explain why the default sometimes adds gain? Does this mean that this isn't really a bug? Thanks again. |

The default curves (slow-out/fast-in) typically sound "better" for longer fades or fades of two different sources. But are not unity-gain (they're parabolic). In a wet/dry scenario, particularly over a short duration, they're more likely to add gain. It's not a bug, per-se, but implies that it is worth re-evaluating whether they should be the default in an app like Forge. BTW, you can change the defaults for all effects in prefs in Forge 10, and from the right-click context menu inside the plug-in dialog in Forge 9 (and 10). J. |
