Subject:Compressors

I'm using a laptop w/ SF to record a large blues band. I
have a Sony stereo condenser mike. My first recording came
out OK with some clipping. Someone suggested that a put a
compressor between the mike and the computer. I'm
considering a Prosonus Blue Max. Any comments? Experiences?
Is this a good idea? so I don't have to babysit the input?
