OK, I finally figured out that Movie Studio Pro Pack includes SoundForge but NOT the Vocal Eraser plugin (for whatever reason ... maybe someone knows why Sony would do this ...) ... But what could I use to reduce (background) noise - such as rustling clothes, scraping chairs, sneezes, coughs ... ? Any help would be appreciated ... Cheers, Andreas |

There's not a whole lot you can do to remove random, non-repetative noises. There are some things you can try though. Use EQ. Most voices use a very limited range of frequencies. Try boosting from 300Hz to 2KHz and dropping everything outside this range. It won't reduce noise that falls inside the range, but it should help reduce anything else. Don't do it too much though or the voice will start sounding like someone with an adenoid problem over an old telephone. If the voice is substantially louder than the noise then you can try a noise gate. This will silence quiet sections during pauses between words, when the noises are more noticeable. Personally i find it more disturbing than the noise. |

Thanks for the tip ... I'll give the EQ approach a try ... I'm sure it will be some improvement ... and that's better than the way it sounds right now .. Unfortunately, the voice is rather quiet, so the noise gate won't cut it ... Cheers, Andreas |

Is there a way to remove static type noise from a phone recording for instance? Thank you. |

If it is continual noise, then the Sony NR plugin generally does quite well. You sample a piece of noise from a passage where there is no wanted signal (say between two words in a spoken word recording) and the plugin applies this to remove the same noise profile across the whole recording. If it is not continual noise, you generally have to edit it out manually section by section. |

You may also want to try the "Click and Crackle Removal" part of NR-2.0 plug-ins. |
