Subject:Low Midi Volume with Piano Roll Editor

I'm trying to create a midi track by using the piano roll editor but the volume is so low when I playback using the editor I can hardly hear it. How can I make the playback volume of the editor higher?

Thanks,

Kit

Piano Roll preview volume is controlled by the Preview fader in the Mix Console for general volume.

However, previewing through the Piano Roll is routed through the signal path of the MIDI track that the clip you are editing is owned by.

This includes any envelopes on the track: Vol, Pan, and CC msgs.

The current value for things like this are determined based upon the cursor location. So if you have a MIDI Vol envelope at 4.1.1 that is very low, this is the volume that the Piano Roll is "playing through".

If there is no envelope, then the static trim values for the track are applied.

Thanks for the reply. I don't completely understand it. I open a new file. I insert a new midi track. I press g to allow inline editing and I have the clip properties showing. I can see two piano rolls. If I press the note in the piano roll on the track it sounds much louder than when I press the same note on the piano roll in the clip properties.

Considering your response here, I can imagine.

If you mean by this:

If I press the note in the piano roll on the track it sounds much louder than when I press the same note on the piano roll in the clip properties.

You are clicking the keyboard on the track or Piano Roll, then yes, you notice a difference in volume.

What you are actually hearing is a different note velocity.

The in-line editor keyboard sends different velocity depending on where you click the key. Farther to the left, outputs a lower velocity, clicking farther to the right on the key produces a higher velocity.

The Piano Roll clip editor editor has a fix velocity regardless of where you click on the key.

I would suggest you stick to the in-line editing mode as you are actually editing what you will hear when you playback. The Clip editor edits the raw data, which can then be affected by what is actually on the timeline.

Note: CC msgs you edit with the Piano Roll clip editor are not automatically placed on the time line. You have to manually import them as envelopes to the track which owns the clip.

Peter, thanks for this. I have been using Acid pro since version 3, and I had never picked up that the keyboard can produce different velocities depending on where you click on the key!
